Our core purpose is to make people healthier and enhance and protect their lives
Our approach to sponsorships supports our core purpose of making people healthier and protecting and enhancing their lives.
Discovery’s science-based wellness programme, Vitality, is the manifestation of this core purpose. In the same way that Vitality helps to make people healthier, our sponsorships give us the opportunity to work with more people to achieve the goal of a healthier society.
The benefits of an active lifestyle
Sport is a powerful tool for promoting the benefits of an active lifestyle for overall wellness. It epitomises our core purpose and provides a tangible way to tell more people about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. We use our sponsorships and the communication opportunities they offer, to deliver two key messages to people:
- A physical and active lifestyle is possible - and within reach of anyone
- Screening, prevention and good nutrition can help a person be healthier
We choose specific sponsorships because they provide us with the necessary platforms to engage with communities on the issues of health, wellness and excellence in sport. Our sponsorships allow us to educate people on the steps they can take to improve their health and also provide us with opportunities to activate specific Vitality initiatives. The Vitality HealthyFood™ benefit, an initiative aimed at driving awareness around nutrition and encouraging more South Africans to eat healthily, is showcased at several of the walks Discovery is involved in, including the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk in Johannesburg, the Discovery Cape Times Big Walk in Cape Town, and the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk. Vitality has put together coaching manuals for soccer, rugby, netball, swimming, athletics and hockey, which extends Vitality’s focus on children’s health and wellness to more schools, teachers and sport coaches in South Africa.

Keeping South Africans safe at sea with the NSRI
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) helps keep South Africans safe at sea, by offering sea rescue services and educational services for the underprivileged.
The NSRI is manned by 980 dedicated volunteers and comprises 72 rescue crafts and 21 rescue vehicles at 29 coastal rescue stations and three inland rescue stations.
Discovery has provided assistance to the NSRI for the past four years by donating three state of the art rescue runners every year. To date we have donated nine runners to the NSRI to allow sea rescue and to make sure South African waters are safe. The rescue runners are located at the stations with the most drowning incidents in the country. Discovery will launch the last rescue runners in 2012.
Spreading the good news
Springbok rugby captain John Smit is a Discovery brand ambassador. His role is to interact with different Discovery audiences as a positive role model. John is an exceptional leader, team player and sportsman with a valuable legacy for all South Africans. This is why we chose to work with him – he inspires everyone he interacts with to set goals for themselves and achieve their potential. John’s interactions with our clients and stakeholders range from giving motivational talks to our sales teams, to attending fundraising events, breakfasts with business leaders, and some of our sponsorship events.
As our ambassador, John focuses on:
- Telling South Africans about the benefits of leading a healthy and active life, and how this improves quality of life
- Raising awareness and funds for important social community projects through his involvement with the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation?
