Swim to slim

By Arthur Jones

Summertime, and the living is easy… and sweaty. There’s no better workout than swimming for beating the heat.

Summer is here and it’s time to break in those new swimming costumes. However, you’re probably not so excited about the thought of jumping in a pool in a cossie. But when it comes to workouts that are quick, low fuss and high benefit, swimming is hard to beat and it will definitely help you get in tip-top shape. Plus, it’s perfectfor summer, when the days are long and warm.

Swimming offers a total-body workout in just 20 minutes, making it a great option if you’re trying to fit exercise into your busy day, says Steve Attwell, chairman of ATC Multisport and head coach at Embark.

It works all the muscles, tendons and joints in a non-weight-bearing manner, which essentially means you can swim more often with lower risk of injury, says Attwell. Plus, you have to teach your body breath control, which has a very positive effect on other activities such as running and cycling.

Ready to dive in? All you need is a costume, cap, goggles, a pool or safe stretch of open water, and this handy time-based swimming workout designed by Attwell. (Don’t forget the sunscreen if you’re training in open water.)
