Becoming the best you can

"The first time I set eyes on the Discovery logo I knew that this is one of the most incredible companies in the world, and I wanted to work here."

Adam arrived at Discovery in 1999. He was a security guard armed with only a matric certificate, but he was full of hope and determination. His aspirations developed while he was safeguarding the parking lot at 27 Fredman.

"For the past 17 years, I have travelled only one road to Discovery, and I can't imagine myself not coming to Discovery."

Moving up

In 2002, Group Facilities offered Adam a position as Concierge. “This was the breakthrough I will cherish for the rest of my life”, he recalls.

The very same year Adam won a Star Award under the Dazzling Clients category. The incentive was a trip for two to Brazil and it was the first flight for both Adam and his lovely wife Betty.

Constant development

In 2003, Adam completed a Customer Service Management certificate through Unisa and, in 2005, he was promoted to Receptionist.

2010 saw him move to the Compliance Department as Compliance Support, the position he still holds today.

In 2015, Adam graduated with a Diploma of Law from the University of Johannesburg, with assistance from Discovery - proof that with the right attitude and ample determination, it is possible to defy gravity and chase your passion.

Real Passion

"I am humbled and blessed to work for one of the best companies in the world. That inspires me to treat every day as my first day at work, and I look forward to coming to work every day.

Discovery is like my second home, where everyone treats each other with respect and care."

A simple approach

Drive, tenacity, and persistence are what keep Adam pushing for more.

He cites and thanks CEO Adrian Gore for planting the culture of persistence in his note of how the company was formed. It is that history that gives Adam the courage to believe that anything is possible. Most importantly, Adam has learnt that you need to set goals and have the ambition and drive to achieve them.

Becoming the best you can

Adam has learnt another crucial lesson here at Discovery - you need to embrace optimism.

He worked hard and has earned the recognition and liberation that comes with that relentless effort.

His focus now is to liberate the best in others by being a team player and sharing his knowledge and experience. He has made it a personal mission to recognise other people’s achievements, and treat people with absolute respect by acknowledging their effort.
