Outside the
top seven
Visualising the
2016/17 Premier
League table
The bottom of the table is where there is typically
more competition in the Premier League, although
the relegation battle has been settled early over
recent seasons. How close the battle at the bottom
could be can be seen by viewing last season’s
league table.
Mid-table
Southampton finished in eighth place in 2016/17
with 46 points; however, they were closer to
relegated Hull City (separated by 12 points)
than they were to seventh placed Everton (a
15-point gap). In fact, just two points separated
Southampton and Stoke in 13th, while the Saints
were only six points ahead of Watford in 17th.
While Leicester City’s miracle run was just two
seasons ago, as Southampton and West Ham
also broke into the top seven, the Premier League
certainly appears to again be reverting into two
mini-leagues – the six clubs in that will likely form
the title race and Everton, who finished in the top
seven last season, and the bottom 13, with little
chance of European football.
Promoted clubs
Due to the nature of how close the league is, bad
luck and injuries could make a big impact for even
the mid-table clubs. However, the main aim for
newly promoted sides Brighton and Hove Albion,
Huddersfield Town and Newcastle United will be to
retain their status in the top flight. Last season, two
of the three clubs promoted to the Premier League
were relegated, with only Burnley securing survival.
Relegation battle
The promoted teams will at least need to keep up
with their rivals at the bottom as the relegation
battle has been over early over recent seasons,
with teams cut adrift at the bottom of the table.
The last time the Premier League relegation battle
was truly decided on the final day was in 2011/12,
when Bolton Wanderers could only draw at Stoke
City when a win would have seen them avoid
the drop. While three points did separate West
Bromwich Albion and Norwich City entering the
last game of the season in 2013/14, West Brom’s
goal difference was also 17 goals better than their
rivals for Premier League survival.
