Can Chelsea win the title for the second
successive season? The last team to win the title in
back-to-back campaigns was Manchester United,
winning the Premier League in three successive
seasons from 2006/07 to 2008/09. In the eight
seasons since, four different clubs have won the
title (Chelsea, Leicester City, Manchester City and
Manchester United).
The last time English football went this long
without a reigning champion winning the division
was over the eight seasons before the creation of
the Premier League. Liverpool (3 titles), Everton
(2), Arsenal (2) and Leeds United (1) all won the
First Division before Manchester United won the
Premier League in 1992/93 (extending the streak
to nine seasons) and 1993/94.
Manchester City (3) and Tottenham Hotspur (2)
are the only teams who have qualified for the
Champions League in the last two seasons.
The last time the same four teams finished in the
top four in back-to-back seasons was in 2007/08
and 2008/09 (Manchester United, Chelsea,
Liverpool FC and Arsenal FC). Those clubs finished
in the top four in four straight seasons from
2005/06 to 2008/09.
Seven different Premier League teams have
qualified for the Champions League over the
last two seasons (Manchester City, Tottenham
Hotspur, Manchester United (via the Europa
League), Leicester City, Chelsea, Arsenal FC and
Liverpool FC). Only six English teams played in the
Champions League in the previous ten seasons.
