Your flu vaccination and COVID-19 booster are very important this year. Here's why.

Following 2 years of low activity of influenza and other respiratory viruses due to the impact of COVID-19 preventative measures, it is expected that 2022 will see the return of influenza infections (flu).

With the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, data from local laboratories has started to show a return of respiratory infections to levels seen before the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has also highlighted the risk of increasing respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and other respiratory viruses in 2022. The RSV season typically starts around February/March in South Africa and usually precedes the flu season which usually reaches its peak in the winter months (May to August) but may start as early as April.

Flu and COVID-19 are very different diseases

Flu and COVID-19 are very different diseases. Although influenza and COVID-19 may present with similar symptoms, the viruses that cause them are not the same. COVID-19 is caused by infection with SARS-CoV-2, and flu is caused by infection with influenza viruses. To gain protection against each, you need to have the vaccine developed against each disease.

You don't have to wait between COVID-19 and flu vaccinations. You can have them at the same time and, if you've had COVID-19 and recovered, it's safe to have the flu vaccine.
