Lehurutshe District Educational Campus
The population of the Ngaka Modiri Molema district is around 764 351, i.e. 24% of the population of the North West. According to the Department of Health’s Human Resource Report (October 2011), there are fewer than 2 500 professional nurses in the North West. To address the shortages of healthcare personnel, a new mid-level health profession – the clinical associate – has been introduced nationally. According to the report there is a need for 1 350 clinical associates at all district hospitals. The Wits Centre for Rural Health aims to facilitate the education and training of primary healthcare workers in rural areas, and has developed district educational campus programmes towards this end. A pilot project has been launched in the Ngaka Modiri Molema district of the North West, using the Lehurutshe-Zeerust District Hospital complex. The campus will serve as a model for further training development in the province. A grant from Discovery is being used towards the priority needs of the pilot campus.
