The key to health and wellbeing goes beyond focusing on individual nutrients. To live a healthy lifestyle, we must create good eating habits and cooking skills and exercise every day.

Vitality’s overarching nutrition principles include what to choose, what to limit and what to do:

Give preference to whole grains.
Eat beans, split peas, lentils, and chickpeas on a regular basis.
Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables in a variety of colours every day.
You can eat fish, seafood, chicken or eggs daily.
You can have unflavoured milk and yoghurt daily.
You can include fats and oils in your diet every day.
Control your portion sizes.
Limit salt and salty foods.
Restrict sugary drinks (including fruit juice) and foods high in sugar.
Enjoy a variety of less processed foods.

Members that engage with the HealthyFood benefit have shifted their purchasing behaviour

↑29% Increase in the amount of fruit and vegetables purchased
↓33% Decrease in the amount of sugar purchased
↓31% Decrease in the amount of salt purchased

Our latest updates to the HealthyFood catalogue will start on 6 September 2019 – helping you make better choices when you shop at Pick n Pay or Woolworths.

Discovery Vitality will continue to review and update the HealthyFood catalogue. The benefit helps you to apply the following top five tips to change the way you shop:

  1. Always include plain fresh or frozen vegetables and fruit in your basket.
  2. Choose breakfast cereals, breads and crackers lowest in sugar and sodium (salt) and highest in fibre.
  3. The less processed a food, the better.
  4. Choose fresh fish as smoked fish can contain up to 23 times more sodium (salt).
  5. Canned beans, lentils and chickpeas in brine are a quick and easy way to up your legumes intake. You can drain and rinse it to remove excess sodium.

These recommendations will keep evolving into a programme that incentivises the best nutrition practices out there – for your good health, wellness and happiness.
