It's an easy guess with new SpendTrend24 research by Discovery Bank and Visa reporting that entertainment spending is booming online, especially for South Africans and Discovery Bank clients.
Sports entertainment is booming!
This surge is mostly due to a rise in online ticketing and sports entertainment transactions. In fact, the sports entertainment industry alone saw massive growth, jumping from R8.8 billion in the 2020 financial year to an incredible R23.7 billion in 2023.
It's not just sports, it's songs and series too
Online streaming services for music, series, and movies have also become hugely popular since the pandemic began, and are now a key source of entertainment for consumers. According to Euromonitor, a whopping 80% of South Africans stream video content at least once a week.
Entertainment spending is also the fastest growing online spend category in SA.
