HealthyFood rewards are good for bellies and bank accounts

The link between good nutrition, good health and good finances is intuitive - but data from SpendTrend24 puts numbers to this knowledge! Learn how Discovery Bank makes healthy eating as good for your bank account as for your belly.

How much of your income is spent on food?

In the past year, local food prices went up by 12%. South Africans shelled out 8% more on groceries, with spending on dining out and takeout also rising by 8%.

This is according to the newly published research in SpendTrend24, which compares consumer spending in 14 global cities. The study reports that even though we are dining out more, about 70% of South Africans said they still cooked or baked a meal at home at least once a week.

This lines up with broader data that shows home cooking tends to be the more affordable choice in emerging markets, with over half of the food budget allocated to groceries. In South Africa, Cape Townians were found to spend the most on groceries, while Joburgers spent more than other local cities on eating out.

Discovery Bank clients get the best of nutrition and affordability

Interestingly, 37% of South Africans surveyed mentioned they'd be willing to pay extra for healthier food options.
