How do I use Discovery AI?

Discovery AI is available in the Discovery Bank app, with an on-the-go version available through the WhatsApp application.

To get started in the Discovery Bank app, log in to your banking app and then tap the AI button at the top of your Home screen.

To get started on WhatsApp, add the Discovery Bank WhatsApp number, +27 11 324 4844, to your contacts and type Hi in WhatsApp to start a session. For your security, you'll quickly authenticate through the Discovery Bank app before starting your chat.

What is the difference between Discovery AI on WhatsApp and in the banking app?

Discovery AI is your smart banking assistant that learns, adapts and responds to your needs.

Discovery AI through our WhatsApp channel gives you quick and easy on-the-go support where you can ask questions, retrieve documents, access personalised spending insights and get help managing your finances.

Discovery AI in the banking app offers you a richer experience and even more support than what is currently available through our WhatsApp channel. You can make select purchases and payments just by typing a request, uploading an invoice or snapping a photo - while you stay fully in control by reviewing and approving every payment before it's processed.

Discovery AI in your banking app also gives you more personalised insights and recommendations based on your banking behaviour and where you are in your journey. Plus, with intelligent navigation, dynamic menus and direct links into the app, Discovery AI will guide you to the right action quickly and efficiently with fewer taps, less searching and no backtracking.

Why isn't Discovery AI working for me on WhatsApp?

Discovery AI only recognises your primary registered cellphone number.

To see if you're using the correct number:

  • Log in to the Discovery Bank app.
  • Tap More.
  • Scroll down to Contact Details.

The number you're sending the WhatsApp message from must match the primary mobile number your Discovery Bank app shows. If it does but Discovery AI is still not working, please unblock Discovery Bank as a WhatsApp contact if necessary: how to unblock business contacts on WhatsApp.

What type of device do I need?

You can use any device that can download and run the latest versions of the Discovery Bank app and WhatsApp, including the web and desktop WhatsApp versions. If you would like to use Discovery AI on WhatsApp, it's important that the number of the WhatsApp profile you are using matches your primary registered number in the Discovery Bank app.

What if I don't have WhatsApp?

If you don't have WhatsApp, you can access Discovery AI in the Discovery Bank app. To get started, log in to your banking app and then tap the AI button at the top of your Home screen.

Can I use WhatsApp on desktop?

Yes, you can.

Is Discovery AI free?

Discovery AI is currently free to use for Discovery Bank clients.

Do I need a specific bank account to use Discovery AI?

You need a valid Discovery Bank account in good standing to use Discovery AI in the banking app or on WhatsApp. You will not be able to use Discovery AI if you have the previous Discovery Card first issued before the launch of Discovery Bank.

Can I cancel anytime?

There is no need to cancel. If you no longer want to use Discovery AI, then you don't have to.

Discovery AI uses your banking information to develop insights. There's no need to upload anything else.

If you need more support, you can ask to speak to a Discovery Banker, through live chat and our secure in-app calling service, or you can contact the Discovery Bank contact centre on 0800 07 96 97.


Customisation and control

Can I personalise Discovery AI's recommendations?

Discovery AI works with your data, including the budgets and goals you have set. Many of the specific features for financial planning are in the Discovery Bank app. Discovery AI offers added insights which can better inform the budgets you set.

Discovery AI does not give advice but helps you understand your data so you can make better decisions. It can also help with things like tracking towards a savings goal or setting a reminder to pay a bill. Many of these reminders will be delivered in the banking app.

How often do I need to interact with Discovery AI?

It's up to you. Each user's needs are different. Discovery AI will help you improve your financial health and it's there for you, 24/7/365.

How is this different from the Discovery Bank app?

Discovery AI is embedded directly in the Discovery Bank app - helping you move through your banking in fewer steps. Discovery AI is conversational and uses the latest technology to answer your questions, whether specific to you (transaction and product-related information) or more general. Discovery AI can make sense of all the data points to help you with a specific need, in one place.

The Discovery Bank app is critical to your banking journey and we are very proud of it. It's one of the highest-ranked banking apps in the world. The Discovery Bank app will help you use the insights from Discovery AI to do your banking. You will still open accounts, transact, monitor and adjust budgets, play the Vitality Active Rewards gameboard and view your other Discovery products in the banking app, with Discovery AI guiding you to the right action quickly and efficiently - simplifying your everyday tasks while actively guiding you towards smarter financial decisions every day.

Discovery AI uses all the complex banking data at its disposal and a combination of next-generation technologies to make sense of it all.

Does Discovery AI give financial planning or investment advice?

Discovery AI does not give financial advice. If you need these services, we suggest you speak to a financial adviser. The role of Discovery AI is to help you optimise your financial health and banking value by giving you insights about your banking and banking products, so that you can make informed decisions.

Can Discovery AI do transactions or make changes to my bank account?

Discovery AI will guide you to exactly where you need to go to transact or make changes to your bank account. Discovery AI in the banking app can facilitate certain payments and value-added services like purchasing airtime, data, water, electricity and digital vouchers. Discovery AI helps you make payments and select purchases through chat-based interaction, uploading a digital invoice, or taking a picture of a physical invoice.

Discovery AI will gather the payment details for you to review and approve - ensuring you always stay fully in control.

If you want to perform any other transactions, you will need to log in to the Discovery Bank app and transact from there.

How often does Discovery AI update my insights?

The insights you see on Discovery AI are generated in real time. Sometimes there may be slight lags in getting the latest information, but it's as up to date as possible.


Trust and accuracy

How accurate are Discovery AI's recommendations?

Discovery AI gives insights to give you the power to make decisions. Discovery AI will give you information to help you understand and improve your finances.

It's important to remember that Discovery AI can make mistakes. These should be rare and we'll try to limit them. We recommend that you confirm the information in the Discovery Bank app before making any important decisions.

Does Discovery AI replace human financial advisers?

No, definitely not. Each client is different. The role of the financial adviser is to unpack each client's needs and financial situation and advise on the best products and services for that client. Discovery AI is here to help you in your financial journey and is meant to be used along with regular consultations with a financial adviser.

What happens if Discovery AI gives the wrong advice?

This can happen, but it should be rare. When we get something wrong, you can reply with a disappointed emoji or give us feedback in the chat. We take this feedback seriously and have both human and machine-learning feedback loops to make sure we keep getting better.


Security and privacy

How does Discovery AI protect my financial data?

We're compliant with security and privacy legislation. We process all information in a secure manner without unnecessary dependence on third parties.

Is my data shared with any public or third-party large language models (LLMs)?

We don't use public large language models (LLM's). Your data is not used to train these models and is not publicly accessible. For the best performance, we use a variety of LLM's which are scaled using a hybrid architecture. To secure your data and safeguard your privacy, we use best practice methods to process data and we comply with all required standards. Some of these methods may include the use of secure and encrypted networks, data anonymisation and serverless computing.

Will my bank account details be shared with third parties?

We don't sell or share your information with third parties. All interactions with Discovery AI are between you (the client) and Discovery Bank.

What security measures do you have in place?

The Discovery Bank app uses advanced security technologies to protect your account with our real-time identity verification and biometric checks. To use Discovery AI in the banking app you need to securely log in to the app before you can get started.

All WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted. To start a session, you must be using a WhatsApp account linked to the primary number in your Discovery Bank app and you must authenticate your session in the app.

Session times are limited, after which you will be asked for a new WhatsApp authentication or to log in to the banking app again, depending which channel you are using Discovery AI through. For added security, you can only perform select transactions through Discovery AI in the banking app, and not on the WhatsApp channel.

When using Discovery AI on WhatsApp, you should take reasonable steps to protect the contents of your chats and your cellphone. Using locked chats and periodically clearing your WhatsApp chat history are two ways to do this.


AI learning and improvement

How does Discovery AI stay up to date with banking changes?

Discovery AI uses the latest product information from Discovery Bank to formulate responses. It's possible that these could contain errors or be outdated. We take every effort to limit this so that the information is the latest available on the products and services offered by Discovery Bank.

Can I give feedback to improve Discovery AI insights?

Yes. You can ask to give feedback at any time.
