Making and receiving payments has never been easier. From tap-and-go payments to Discovery Pay and Health Banking, here’s all the information you need to master the wide range of payment options available with Discovery Bank.

Discovery Bank payment methods  

What payment methods does Discovery Bank offer?

Discovery Bank offers a range of safe and convenient ways to make payments out of your accounts. These include:

  1. Tap-and-go payments with your Discovery Bank card.
  2. Tap-and-go payments with smart devices using Fitbit Pay, Garmin Pay and Samsung Pay.
  3. Discovery Pay.
  4. Discovery Instant Pay.
  5. Health Banking.
  6. Digital payments.
  7. Debit orders.

How do I update my payment limits?

To change the daily and monthly payment limits on your Discovery Bank profile, you must:

  1. Log in to the banking app.
  2. Tap More on the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Channel limits.
  4. Update daily and monthly limits under Payment limits.
  5. Tap Save to complete the limit change.

Tap-and-go   payments with your Discovery Bank card

Can I use my Discovery Bank card for tap-and-go payments?

You can use your Discovery Bank card to make a quick payment without inserting or swiping your card at payment points. Most payments points have contactless payment functionality. Simply look for the contactless symbol.

Do I earn Discovery Miles and Vitality Money rewards if I make tap-and-go payments?

Yes. You earn Discovery Miles for tap-and-go payments in the same way as if you swiped or inserted your card. Your tap-and-go payments also qualify as spend that accumulates towards your Vitality Active Rewards money goal and Vitality Money rewards.


Tap-and-go payments with smart devices  

Which smart devices can I use for tap-and-go payments?

You can use an eligible Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung device for contactless payments.

How do I set up my smart device for tap-and-go payments?

To make contactless payments using your smart device, simply link your Discovery Bank card to your eligible Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung device and you’re set up for a more convenient and secure payment experience.

Where can I use my smart device for tap-and-go payments?

You can use Fitbit Pay, Garmin Pay and Samsung Pay at any payment point that supports contactless payments (look for the wireless logo).

You can use Samsung Pay anywhere. Simply scan your Samsung phone next to the magnetic stripe reader.

Do I earn Discovery Miles and Vitality Money rewards if I make tap-and-go payments with my smart device?

Yes. You earn Discovery Miles for smart device tap-and-go payments. Your tap-and-go payments also qualify as spend that accumulates towards your Vitality Active Rewards and Vitality Money rewards goals.


Discovery Pay  

What is Discovery Pay?

Discovery Pay is a payment method on the Discovery Bank app that allows you to pay and receive amounts from Discovery clients in your contact list using just their cellphone number. You do not have to exchange banking details, which makes it a quick method of payment.

Who can use Discovery Pay?

While only Discovery Bank clients can make payments using Discovery Pay, all Discovery clients can receive payments with Discovery Pay regardless of who they bank with.

Discovery Bank clients can invite any existing Discovery client with or without a Discovery Bank account to join Discovery Pay by making a payment to their cellphone number.

How do I set up Discovery Pay?

To set up Discovery Pay, you must:

  1. Log in to the banking app.
  2. Tap More on the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Discovery Pay.
  4. Choose the account to pay from or deposit into.
  5. Review the information and select Save to complete the setup.
How do I pay someone using Discovery Pay if they already have Discovery Pay set up?

To pay someone with Discovery Pay, you must:

  1. Log in to the banking app.
  2. Tap Transact on the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Discovery Pay.
  4. Scroll down to Contacts on Discovery Pay.
  5. Choose the contact you want to pay. An icon next to a beneficiary’s name indicates that the person has already registered for Discovery Pay.
  6. Select the account you want to pay from and enter the Amount and Reference details.
  7. Tap Next and confirm the details to complete the payment.
How do I pay someone using Discovery Pay if they have not yet set up Discovery Pay?

To pay someone with Discovery Pay, you must:

  1. Log in to the banking app.
  2. Tap Transact on the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Discovery Pay.
  4. Scroll down to Contacts not yet on Discovery Pay.
  5. Choose the contact you want to pay.
  6. Select the account you want to pay from and enter the Amount and Reference details.
  7. Tap Next and confirm the details to complete the payment.
What does Discovery Pay cost?

The transaction fee for Discovery Pay is:

  • Free for clients who have a Discovery Bank Suite or a Discovery Bank Transaction Account with the bundled fee option.
  • R2.50 per transaction for clients who have a Discovery Bank Card Account or a Discovery Bank Transaction Account with the pay-as-you-transact option.

Discovery Instant Pay  

What are instant payments?

Unlike some normal interbank digital payments that can take hours or even days to go through, Discovery Bank Instant Payments are in real time. Plus, you can make them at any time of the day, on any day of the week, to any participating bank in South Africa.

How much do instant payments cost?

The transaction fee for Discovery Bank Instant Payments is:

  • Free for clients who have a Discovery Bank Black or Purple Suite or a Discovery Bank Black Transaction Account with the bundled fee option.
  • R10 per transaction for clients with all other Discovery Bank Suites, Discovery Bank Card Accounts and Discovery Bank Transaction Accounts.
  • R35 per transaction for clients with only Discovery Bank savings accounts.

Health   Banking

What is Health Banking?

Health Banking allows Discovery Bank clients with a Discovery Health Medical Scheme membership to link their Discovery Bank debit or credit card to instantly settle medical co-payments at pharmacies like Clicks and Dis-Chem, hospitals and medical service providers.

This means you can simply pick up your medicine or visit a hospital or medical service provider and we’ll automatically pay the remaining amount due on your treatment on medicine. You can even set a limit to the maximum amount you're happy for us to pay automatically.

How does Health Banking work?

All you have to do is set up Health Banking on the Discovery Bank app and link your Discovery Health Medical Scheme membership to your debit or credit card with Discovery Bank.

Then, simply visit a participating pharmacy, hospital or medical service provider and pay with Health Banking. When a co-payment is due, we will pay from your account automatically and you’ll receive a transaction notification.

How do I activate Health Banking?

To activate Health Banking, you must:

  1. Log in to the banking app.
  2. Tap More on the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Health Banking.
  4. Accept the terms and conditions and tap Set up.
  5. Select the card you want to link and set a transaction limit, then tap Next.
  6. Review the information and select Complete to finish.
Who can use Health Banking?

If you’re a primary Discovery Bank accountholder as well as a Discovery Health Medical Scheme member or dependant over the age of 18, you can set up Health Banking.

Do my dependants have to activate Health Banking too?

Only a primary Discovery Bank accountholder can activate Health Banking and it is limited to one Health Banking subscription per Discovery Health Medical Scheme plan. This applies to all dependants on this plan, with co-payments for each dependant qualifying for payment from the same linked Discovery Bank card.

What can I use Health Banking for?

Health Banking can settle co-payments automatically for these healthcare services:

  • Pharmacy payments
  • Pathology (including blood tests)
  • Radiology (including X-rays, but excluding MRI and CT scans)
  • Hospital admissions.
Where can I use Health Banking?

You can use Health Banking at pharmacies like Clicks and Dis-Chem, and select hospitals and medical service providers. You can also use Health Banking to settle co-payments on medicine delivered to you.

What does Health Banking cost?

The monthly fee for Health Banking is:

  • Free for clients with a Discovery Bank Suite
  • R10 per month for clients with a Discovery Bank Card Account or a Discovery Bank Transaction Account.
What can’t I use Health Banking for?

You can’t use Health Banking for:

  • Upfront payments (deductibles)
  • Section 21 medicine (unregistered medicine)
  • Radiology or pathology linked to oncology
  • MRI scans and CT scans
  • Co-payments that are larger than the set transaction limit.
Does the interest-free period apply to Health Banking co-payments?

Your Health Banking co-payment amount doesn’t qualify for an interest-free period.

Can I earn rewards with Health Banking?

Your Health Banking co-payment doesn’t qualify as spend for Vitality Money. You also don’t earn Discovery Miles.

How do I change my Health Banking settings?

You can change settings like your maximum co-payment limit and the card you use for payments on the Discovery Bank app.

Which cards can I link to Health Banking?

You can link Health Banking to your Discovery Bank credit card or your Discovery Bank debit card. Remember, if you would like co-payments to be settled from your transaction account, you need to have the Discovery Bank debit card associated with it.

Pay beneficiaries   through EFTs (digital payments)

How do I pay an existing beneficiary?

To pay a beneficiary that has already been added to your account, you must:

  1. Log in to the banking app.
  2. Tap Transact on the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Pay.
  4. Choose the beneficiary you want to pay from the list.
  5. Choose an account to pay from, enter the amount and other information, and then tap Next.
  6. Review the information and select Pay to complete the payment.
How do I add a new beneficiary?

To add a new beneficiary, you must:

  1. Log in to the banking app.
  2. Tap Transact on the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Pay.
  4. Tap Add a beneficiary and pay.
  5. Complete the information needed and tap Next.
  6. Review the information and select Add Beneficiary to complete the setup.
How do I make a once-off payment to a new beneficiary?

To add a beneficiary for a once-off payment, you must:

  1. Log in to the banking app.
  2. Tap Transact on the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Pay.
  4. Tap Add a beneficiary and pay.
  5. Complete the information needed and tap Next.
  6. Review the information and select Pay Once.
  7. Choose an account to pay from, enter the amount and other information, and then tap Next.
  8. Review the information and select Pay to complete the payment.
How do I set up a scheduled payment to a beneficiary?

To set up a scheduled payment, you must:

  1. Log in to the banking app.
  2. Tap Transact on the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Pay.
  4. Choose the beneficiary you want to pay from the list or add a beneficiary.
  5. Choose an account to pay from, enter the amount and reference details.
  6. Tap the arrow under Schedule.
  7. Select the schedule start date and end date, and payment interval and then tap Confirm.
  8. Tap Next, then review the information and select Pay to complete the setup.
How do I add a public beneficiary?

To add a new public beneficiary, you must:

  1. Log in to the banking app.
  2. Tap Transact on the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Pay.
  4. Tap on the top-right corner and select Public beneficiaries.
  5. Select the public beneficiary from the list.
    • You can scroll through available public beneficiaries or use the search bar to look for the public beneficiary you need.
  6. Add the reference information and tap Next.
  7. Review the information and select Add Beneficiary to complete the setup.
How do I edit an existing beneficiary’s details?

To edit the details of an existing beneficiary, you must:

  1. Log in to the banking app.
  2. Tap More on the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Beneficiaries.
  4. Select the icon on the top of the screen.
  5. Update the details and tap Next.
  6. Review the information and select Confirm to complete the update.
How do I delete a beneficiary?

To edit the details of an existing beneficiary, you must:

  1. Log in to the banking app.
  2. Tap More and select Beneficiaries.
  3. Select the icon on the top of the screen.
  4. Select Confirm to complete the request.
What do EFTs (digital payments) cost?

The transaction fee for a digital payment is:

  • Free for clients who have a Discovery Bank Suite or a Discovery Bank Transaction Account with the bundled fee option.
  • R2.50 per transaction for clients who have a Discovery Bank Card Account or a Discovery Bank Transaction Account with the pay-as-you-transact option.
  • R15 per transaction for clients who have only a Discovery Bank savings account.

International   payments

Can I make and receive international payments with Discovery Bank?

You can make international point-of-sale purchases (purchases while you are abroad) using your Discovery Bank debit and credit cards while travelling, or shopping online.

However, we do not currently support international payments or transfers between your Discovery Bank accounts and any foreign, non-South African bank accounts.
