What flight rewards can I get with Vitality Money?

With Vitality Money, you can get upfront discounts of up to 40% on local and international flights (base fare and YQ tax) based on your Discovery Bank product, Vitality Money status and qualifying spend. What is average monthly spend?

For your travel benefits, we look at your average monthly spend over the previous rolling 12 months at the time of booking. If you haven’t had a Discovery Bank credit card for that long, we’ll look at your average monthly spend over the number of months you’ve already had your Discovery Bank credit card, with a minimum period required of three months.

If you upgraded to Discovery Bank from a Discovery Card that was first issued before the launch of Discovery Bank, we'll include your spend history before upgrading.


Before you travel internationally

Do I have to activate my Discovery Bank card for international use?

No, your Discovery Bank card is already preauthorised for international use so you don’t have to activate it to work overseas.

Must I let Discovery Bank know if I am travelling abroad?

Yes, you need to let Discovery Bank know where you are travelling and which dates you will be there.

For security purposes, Discovery Bank could decline international transactions that may look like fraud or out of the ordinary transactions. By letting us know that you will be travelling to a different country, we can note it on our system and make sure that we do not decline transactions made by you.

To let us know that you are travelling, call us on 0800 07 96 97.

How do I get a Confirmation of Funds letter from Discovery Bank?

You can request a Confirmation of Funds letter by simply calling Discovery Bank on 0800 07 96 97.

Remember to have the following information on hand when you call:

  • The embassy or consulate’s name and address.
  • Your full name and passport number.
  • The account details you want us to display on the letter.

Banking while travelling internationally

Can I load foreign currency on my Discovery Bank card?

No, your Discovery Bank card is not a currency card, so you can't add a different currency to it. However, you can pay for transactions by swiping your card while travelling abroad, as well as withdraw foreign currency in cash from most Visa ATMs worldwide.

Can I use my Discovery Bank card at ATMs abroad, and what does it cost?

Yes, you can withdraw local currency from Visa ATMs worldwide. The set Discovery Bank fee for international withdrawals is R65 for each withdrawal. The Discovery Bank Black and Purple Suites and Discovery Bank Black Transaction Account (bundled fee) offer unlimited free withdrawals worldwide.

Remember that certain international ATMs might charge an additional fee when you withdraw cash. Make sure that you check the ATM for this information before you use it. The exchange rate at the time applies, and we charge you a standard currency conversion fee of 2.75%. Check the Banking fees guide for more information on fees for international withdrawals.

What does it cost to swipe my Discovery Bank card when travelling abroad?

International point-of-sale swipes are free for all cardholders, but we charge you a standard currency conversion fee of 2.75%. Please note that there is a fee for international cash withdrawals.

Who do I contact if there are fraudulent transactions on my card while travelling abroad?

To report fraud on your Discovery Bank card, you can contact Discovery Bank on +27 11 324 4444. This number has a 24/7 service.

Can I access the Discovery Bank app while travelling abroad?

Yes, you can access the Discovery Bank app while travelling abroad, as long as you have an active internet connection. This means that you can manage your banking no matter where you are in the world.

Can I receive OTP notifications while travelling abroad?

Yes, you can receive OTP notifications through SMS while travelling abroad as long as you have activated SMS roaming with your cellular provider.

Does it use data when I access the Discovery Bank app abroad?

Yes, accessing your Discovery Bank app while abroad will use the same amount of data as back home in South Africa. Make sure you have international roaming activated or connect to a trusted Wi-Fi connection to access the app.

Note: Make sure that you are aware of roaming data costs since it can differ in countries.

Do I have access to travel lounges with my Discovery Bank card?

Clients with Discovery Bank Gold and Platinum cards do not have benefits for access to travel lounges.

Clients with a Discovery Bank Black cards receive six complimentary travel lounge visits a year and one free guest for each visit through LoungeKey to over 1 000 airport lounges worldwide. This includes visits to domestic South African travel lounge partners. Check out the Visa Signature LoungeKey website for information on which lounges are eligible.

Clients with a Discovery Bank Purple card have unlimited access for themselves and one free guest for each visit to LoungeKey partner travel lounges. Check out the Visa Infinite LoungeKey website for more information on which lounges are eligible.

Do I earn base Discovery Miles when I use my Discovery Bank credit card while travelling abroad?

Yes, clients with a Discovery Bank credit card can earn base Discovery Miles in line with the normal base earn rate and monthly threshold on all qualifying transactions.

 

Transactions that do not qualify for earning base Discovery Miles are:

  • Cash withdrawals   
  • Electronic fund transfers (EFTs)   
  • Budget facility transfers (including the iPhone benefit)   
  • Gambling transactions   
  • Monthly Discovery Bank and Vitality Money fees   
  • Debit orders   
  • Transactions made with a Discovery Bank debit card
  • Transactions on your transaction account, including your debit card spend.

Please note:

  • Spend will be calculated using the daily exchange rates.
  • Your account needs to be in good standing at the time of the transaction to earn Discovery Miles.

Travel insurance with Discovery Bank cards

Do I get travel insurance with my Discovery Bank card?

Clients with a Discovery Bank Gold or Platinum credit card qualify for Oojah Travel Protection and certain Visa benefits.

Clients with a Discovery Bank Black card qualify for the Visa Signature travel benefits and clients with a Discovery Bank Purple card qualify for the Visa Infinite travel insurance benefit.

How do I activate my travel insurance?

To activate travel insurance, call Discovery Bank on 0800 07 96 97 with the following information:

  • The dates of your travel.
  • The countries you are travelling to.
  • Details of the individuals you want to insure.

Keep in mind:

  • Only individuals whose flights have been booked with a qualifying Discovery Bank card qualify for travel insurance with Discovery Bank.
  • The trip must depart from and return to South Africa to qualify.
  • The international travel benefit is only valid for 90 days from the date of your departure.

What travel benefits do I get with Oojah and Discovery Bank?

The international travel benefit covers you for emergency medical and non-medical costs outside the borders of South Africa for 90 days from your date of departure from South Africa. The cover ends on your return home or after 90 days from your date of departure from South Africa, whichever happens first.

Below are some of the benefits you qualify for with Oojah and Discovery Bank:

  • Emergency medical cover
  • Assistance services
  • Personal accident cover
  • Cancellation and curtailment (returning home before the scheduled date)
  • Baggage loss
  • Missed connection – minimum connecting time of four hours
  • Baggage delayed for more than 12 hours
  • International flight delayed by more than 12 hours over the intended departure time
  • Personal liability
  • Hijack and wrongful detention (daily benefit of R750 payable for a maximum of 10 days)
  • Carrier accumulation limit (maximum total amount for insured individuals travelling in the same carrier at any one time)
  • Emergency travel and accommodation
  • Loss of cash or travel documents.

Please note:

The personal accident and medical benefits under the travel policy do not apply to cardholders who are older than 75 years. Cardholders who are older than 65 do not qualify for the permanent total disablement benefit unless they are employed.

No, you can contact Oojah directly by either calling them on 011 351 4531 during their office hours (Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 16:30) or emailing them at travelinsurance@hollardti.co.za.

Do I qualify for travel benefits with Visa if I have a Discovery Bank Gold or Platinum card?

How do I claim my Visa travel benefits?

For travel medical emergencies, you can call Visa directly on:

For all other claims, you can email Visa at creditcardclaims@broadspire.eu.

Include the following information in your claims email:

  • Your full name
  • The first nine digits of your card
  • Your address
  • Details on what you’re claiming for.

You will receive a claim form. This form must be returned within 90 days to creditcardclaims@broadspire.eu along with the relevant supporting documents.

Do I qualify for travel benefits with Visa if I have a Discovery Bank Gold or Platinum card?
