Over 10 years of innovation with Discovery Insure

It's been a month of celebration as Discovery Group reached its 30th anniversary on 10 March 2022. As we commemorate 30 years of offering real value that makes our clients healthier, happier and protects their lives, this milestone brings to mind our own evolution since the launch of Discovery Insure in 2011.

In just over a decade, Discovery Insure has grown rapidly through successfully delivering a smooth-running, behavioural-based model to the motor insurance industry. Today, Discovery Insure provides cover for over 295,000 vehicles, employs powerful incentives and telematics technology to reduce risk, improves driving behaviour, and offers advanced safety features that best protect our clients and their vehicles. This has all been made possible through our Shared-value Insurance model, a globally recognised principle that means that all stakeholders (clients, the insurer and society as a whole) benefit as the system improves.

At the heart of our model is Vitality Drive, an incentive-based programme that rewards clients for driving well and adopting safer driving behaviours. When they do, it directly reduces the cost of insurance cover as better drivers have fewer and less severe accidents.

The numbers speak for themselves.

Since we opened our doors, we have paid out over R1.3 billion in fuel cash back and over R15.4 billion in claims showing that we've given significant value back to our clients. We also get to our clients the fastest: our research also shows that the average time between our Vitality Drive clients being in an accident that triggers an Impact Alert, and us calling them, is less than 2 minutes. Innovation has led to incomparable rewards and incentives for good driving

• By way of the latest vehicle telematics technology, clients are rewarded with up to R800 fuel cash back every month and weekly Vitality Active Rewards for responsible driving.
• We also incentivise our clients to maintain roadworthy vehicles through easy-to-do vehicle checks like the Annual MultiPoint check, that can be completed at their nearest  Tiger Wheel & Tyre store or Discovery Drive Centre. Clients also get up to 20% off their tyre purchases at Tiger Wheel & Tyre and up to 20% off their vehicle servicing and maintenance at Bosch. 
• With up to 25% off Uber trips, clients benefit by having access to safe travel options, especially when they have to travel late at night. Vitality Drive data over a 12-month period shows a significant reduction of 15% in night-time driving after activating the Uber benefit and since January 2015, we have paid over R25 million in Uber discounts.
• We keep all our clients safe through world-class, intuitive technology.
  • Impact Alert enables us to detect when a client has been in an accident. We send help immediately, even if we can't get hold of them.
  • Crowd Search is our state-of-the-art wireless tracking device that has enhanced stolen-vehicle recovery (SVR) technology, enabling Discovery Insure to locate and recover stolen vehicles.
  • Motion Alert adds an extra layer of protection for clients with the Crowd Search Sensor. It alerts clients if their vehicle is in motion while their mobile phone is not in the vehicle, alerting clients to possible vehicle theft.
