You can have a more youthful family with parkrun and Discovery Vitality

We are celebrating the fifth anniversary of our parkrun sponsorship and five years of helping Vitality members become more youthful through healthier living.

parkrun events have been one of the most versatile fitness events around the world, allowing people of all ages and fitness levels to participate. So if you have been looking for an outdoor activity that both you and your children can take part in, this is it.

parkruns are free, 5 km timed runs that take place at various locations each week. These events offer families the chance to take part in a safe outdoor activity in a scenic setting. And because it's easy to take part in, it's perfect for the entire family, even young children.

As a Discovery Vitality member that's 18 years or older, you'll even earn up to 300 Vitality points for completing an event. If you have children six years and older who are dependants on your policy, they will also earn up to 300 points for doing a parkrun and scanning their barcode at the finish line.

The numbers for parkruns grow each year, and 2017’s last count revealed that 227 345 people signed up to participate in parkruns across the country to get active outdoors.

Last year 72 664 parkrunners linked their profiles to Discovery Vitality – a major growth from 2013’s 7 592 parkrunners.

In 2017 parkrunners across South Africa ran an incredible 9 016 565 km collectively, of that 4 029 590 km were run by participants linked to Discovery Vitality.

Holding the global record for the most amount of parkrunners at an event is the North Beach parkrun in Durban which was held on 20 January 2018 with a whopping 2 527 participants, many of whom were families with young kids enjoying getting active together along Durban's sunny beaches.
