How Vitality Active Rewards sparked a meaningful relationship with parkrun for Johan Duvenhage

Vitality Active Rewards encouraged Johan Duvenhage to look for simple and enjoyable ways to stay active. That search led him to parkrun, which soon became a source of routine, community and purpose in his life.

When 57-year-old Vitality member Johan Duvenhage first joined Vitality Active Rewards, he was not chasing medals or personal records. He wanted to feel healthier, stay active and use technology to guide him toward habits he could maintain.

What began as simple curiosity soon became a steady turning point. The weekly goals felt manageable, and the sense of progress kept him motivated. "Having weekly goals helped me stay consistent, and that changed my entire approach to fitness," he says.

As he looked for activities that felt natural and enjoyable, Johan tried his first parkrun. He appreciated the relaxed environment and the friendly people who made it easy to return. The sense of belonging grew quietly. He returned the next week. And the next. Those small decisions became the start of a rhythm that supported him through work pressure, travel and earlier medical procedures. The weekly 5 km gave him a place where he felt grounded and connected.

Over time, that routine grew into deeper involvement. Johan has completed 348 parkruns, volunteered 359 times and now serves as the parkrun Regional Ambassador for the Free State and Northern Cape. He enjoys supporting events, guiding teams and helping newcomers feel welcome in the same community that encouraged him years ago.

His connection to parkrun strengthened during a recent challenge. Johan had a total knee replacement in December 2025 and needed time to recover. He returned as a volunteer soon after the surgery, and at the end of January he walked the course again for the first time. "Returning to active participation was an emotional experience and my dog Levi was over the moon that we could get back on the course."

Johan believes that meaningful progress comes from simple, consistent movement. "Start today. Go walk the dogs, get to your nearest parkrun and keep it regular," he says. His journey shows how small steps can build long term health, confidence and community.
