If there's one expense everyone is keen to cut down on, it's transport. Almost every South African felt the pinch of rising fuel costs last year, with prices rising by 1.5% in 2023 compared to 2022.
Data analysis in the recently published SpendTrend24 found that on average, Discovery Bank clients were able to spend more on refuelling their tanks compared to other South Africans. How?

Big savings like these have come in handy because Discovery Insure data shows that clients have hit the road more in the last year than after the pandemic. This shift could be because more people have started going back to the office in South Africa last year. Vitality Drive reports that over 75% of clients who work in offices are now commuting at least three days a week.
Another interesting finding of the report was how the refuelling patterns of clients have changed. In 2022, they often refuelled on Tuesdays to soften the blow of fuel price hikes on Wednesdays. But in 2023, they're more likely to refuel based on their own fuel consumption needs, often choosing Fridays as the end of the workweek and start of the weekend.
