What is Vitality Money?

Vitality Money is our behaviour-change programme that helps you become financially healthier. We'll help you measure and understand your current financial situation, help you improve it, and reward you for your positive behaviour changes along the way.

What is a Vitality Money status and how is it determined?

Vitality Money is based on improving six controllable financial behaviours. The Vitality Money Assessment measures how you manage each of these six behaviours and you will earn Vitality Money points for each behaviour based on this.

Your total number of Vitality Money points determines your Vitality Money status (Blue, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Diamond) - and your status determines your rewards.

How do I apply for Vitality Money?

You don't have to apply for Vitality Money, as it is automatically available to you if you have a Discovery Bank Transaction Account, Discovery Bank Card Account, or Discovery Bank Suite. To start reaping the rewards and benefits of Vitality Money, activate Vitality Money on the Discovery Bank app.

How do I activate Vitality Money on my Discovery Bank app?

To activate Vitality Money, you must:

  1. Log in to the Discovery Bank app.
  2. Scroll down to the Vitality Money section and tap Unlock now.
  3. Follow the simple on-screen instruction to set up Vitality Money in minutes.
What does Vitality Money cost?

All the tools, benefits and rewards of Vitality Money are available to Discovery Bank clients for a small, mandatory fee which is included in your total monthly fee.

Vitality Money Rewards

What determines my Vitality Money rewards?

You get Vitality Money rewards based on a combination of:

  • Whether you have set up Vitality Money on the banking app.
  • Whether you have a qualifying Vitality Health membership (optional).
  • Your Vitality Money status.
  • Whether you have a Discovery Bank Suite, a Discovery Bank Card Account, or a Discovery Bank Transaction Account.
  • Whether your account qualifies for rewards at the time of calculation.
  • Your qualifying Discovery Bank card spend.

What rewards can I get with Vitality Money?

Depending on your unique profile and qualifying accounts, you could qualify for rewards, such as:

  • Dynamic Interest Rates that can:
    • Lower your borrowing rate.
    • Boost your interest rate on positive balances in your transaction and credit card accounts and select savings accounts.
  • Boosted dynamic lifestyle rewards, such as:
    • Up to 75% back on HealthyFood at Checkers or Woolworths

What are Dynamic Interest Rates?

Vitality Money lets you control your own interest rates. By managing your money well and improving your Vitality Money status, you can earn better interest rates on select savings accounts and the positive balances in your transaction and credit card accounts. You can even earn lower interest rates for borrowing.

As your status improves you could lower your personalised borrowing rate and boost your interest rate on positive balances in your transaction and credit card accounts and select savings accounts.

What are boosted dynamic lifestyle rewards?

Discovery Bank clients with both Vitality Health and Vitality Money earn boosted dynamic lifestyle rewards.

Your boosted dynamic lifestyle rewards are your total Vitality rewards, which consist of your Vitality Health and Vitality Money rewards combined.

How does my Vitality Money status affect my rewards?

If you improve your vitality money status, you can unlock higher rewards. As your financial health improves, so will your vitality money status, and so too can your rewards increase. Understanding monthly spend

What is qualifying monthly spend?

Vitality money rewards are linked to how much you spend each month. Monthly spend means any qualifying spend on your discovery bank cards for that calendar month. It includes qualifying spend on additional and secondary cards

Which cards will be used to determine monthly spend?

If you have a Discovery Bank credit card account or Discovery Bank suite, we count your qualifying card spend linked to your credit card accounts or foreign currency accounts. If you have a Discovery Bank transaction account, we count your qualifying card spend linked to your transaction accounts or foreign currency accounts. This includes qualifying spend on additional and secondary cards.

What spend qualifies towards Vitality Money rewards?

Your qualifying spend will include local and international straight and budget purchases that have been banked by the merchant, made online or in-store using your Discovery Bank credit card.

Qualifying spend also includes prepaid products and services that you have purchased through the Discovery Bank app, Health Pay and Vitality Pay transactions, Vitality Travel bookings, and visits to The Lounge paid for using your cards.

Transactions that don't qualify towards spend are:

  • Cash withdrawals
  • Traveller's cheque purchase
  • EFTs
  • Debit orders
  • Budget facility transfers
  • Gambling transactions
  • Contact Payments
  • Payments made through online banking
  • For Discovery Bank Credit Card Account and Suite clients:
    • Any card spend linked to your transaction account
How is average monthly spend calculated for my rewards?

When calculating select benefits - for example your Vitality Travel savings, Home Partner Network rewards, Home Loan interest rate discount, and more - we look at your Vitality Money status and your average monthly qualifying spend on your Discovery Bank cards over the past 12 months (measured since the time you've had a Discovery Bank product eligible for rewards). Qualifying products include the Ðiscovery Account, Discovery Bank Transaction Account, Discovery Bank Credit Card Account, and Discovery Bank Suite.

If you upgraded from a Ðiscovery Account or Discovery Bank Transaction Account to a Discovery Bank Credit Card Account or Discovery Bank Suite, we'll count your qualifying spend before and after you upgraded separately based on the product you had at the time.

If you have not had a qualifying Discovery Bank product for twelve months, we'll use your average monthly spend for the number of months available. However, if you switched from the previous Discovery Card product to a Discovery Bank Credit Card Account or Discovery Bank Suite, we'll count your Discovery Card product spend history before your upgrade.

If you've recently joined Discovery Bank as a new client, in your first two calendar months, your Vitality Money rewards will be based on the maximum reward percentage available for your Vitality Money status, regardless of how much you've spent. From the first day of your third calendar month, we'll start using your actual spend history to determine your rewards.


Vitality Active Rewards

What is Vitality Active Rewards?

Vitality Active Rewards encourages and rewards you for living well. Earn thousands of Discovery Miles every week or choose an instant reward as soon as you achieve your goals. The more exercise, drive and spend goals you achieve, the more you get back... all upgraded in the Discovery Bank app.

Who qualifies for Vitality Active Rewards?

Vitality Active Rewards is available in the Discovery Bank app if you're the primary accountholder of any product which comes with Vitality Money. This includes:

  1. Discovery Bank Transaction Accounts
  2. Discovery Bank Credit Card Accounts
  3. Discovery Bank Suites, or
  4. The Ðiscovery Account with zero monthly fees.

Vitality Active Rewards is available to qualifying members with Vitality Health, Vitality Drive or Vitality Money memberships. You need an iOS, Android or Huawei compatible device to access this benefit in the Discovery Bank app. Download or update to the latest version of the Discovery Bank app.

If I am a Discovery Bank secondary cardholder, or have a Discovery Bank savings account or the previous Discovery Card, do I qualify for the enhanced Vitality Active Rewards?

No. You need an account with Vitality Money linked to it.

As an existing Discovery Bank secondary cardholder or savings accountholder, you can add the Ðiscovery Account to your banking portfolio at no cost, which includes Vitality Money for free. Additionally, if you have the previous Discovery Card, you can switch to a new Discovery Bank credit card product that comes with Vitality Money included as part of its monthly fees.

To start the process, simply download the Discovery Bank app, select Join the Bank, and complete the registration process by entering your existing Discovery login details.

Do I need a Discovery Bank credit card to access Vitality Active Rewards?

No. However, having a credit card can provide a more satisfying experience with a more rewarding gameboard.

If you are the primary accountholder of any product that comes with Vitality Money, you can access Vitality Active Rewards through the Discovery Bank app. This includes all new Discovery Bank Transaction Accounts, Credit Card Accounts, Suites, or the Ðiscovery Account that comes with zero monthly fees.

What benefits do I get access to as a Discovery Bank client?

You can enjoy a more personalised experience and exciting features such Instant Rewards as well as Active X Rewards, including Sneak Peeks, Rewards Multipliers and Rest Weeks. You also have the opportunity to earn Discovery Miles on a 1:1 ratio for your groceries, pharmacy and fuel purchases in select categories on your Partner spend tiles, up to a maximum of Ð1,500 per category.

Why can't I play the gameboard on the Discovery app?

If you have a qualifying Discovery Bank product with Vitality Money, then you will access the enhanced gameboard in the Discovery Bank app, and you will not be able to play the gameboard in the Discovery app.

I don't have a South African ID number, can I access Vitality Active Rewards?

Yes. In April 2023, Vitality Health members without South African ID numbers will be able to set up their Discovery Bank account and enjoy the latest version of Vitality Active Rewards. For now, these members can still access Vitality Active Rewards in the Discovery app.

Instant rewards
What are instant rewards?

Instant rewards are rewards that you can get as soon as you reach your goal. These can include a free coffee or the opportunity to make a donation to one of Vitality's charitable initiatives through MoveToGive. If you prefer to wait, you can play the gameboard on Rewards Wednesday to see what Discovery Miles you can earn. When you do choose an instant reward, you can use it right away as soon as you complete your goal ring.

What is a boosted instant reward?

A boosted instant reward is a more valuable instant reward that you can redeem when you achieve an exercise goal streak. Streaks of 5, 10, 15, 25, 50 and multiples of 100 qualify.

Active X Rewards
What is a Rewards Multiplier?

The Rewards Multiplier allows you to double the value of the tile that you have selected on the gameboard. You will earn a Rewards Multiplier for the first time you achieve the following exercise goal streaks: 5, 10, 15, 25, and 50. Thereafter, you will earn a Rewards Multiplier for every 100 (and multiples of 100) exercise goal streak you achieve.

You can also choose to boost your instant reward with the Rewards Multiplier and receive a more valuable instant reward as you achieve your goal. A Rewards Multiplier cannot be carried over to the following week and will be applied automatically to the first tile selected.

Can I double all my Discovery Miles earned with a Rewards Multiplier?

With the Rewards Multiplier, when you achieve an exercise goal streak, you can double your rewards in the form of a boosted Instant Rewards or Discovery Miles equal to double the tile value of your first gameboard play.

If you earn more than one gameboard play (because of closing multiple rings), the Rewards Multiplier will only apply to the Discovery Miles uncovered from the first gameboard play.

What is a Sneak Peek?

The Sneak Peek allows you to view a tile and gives you the option to select another tile without losing your play. You can earn the Sneak Peek by earning double the points to achieve your Exercise and Spend goals or by having a perfect drive week. You can earn up to one Sneak Peek per activity ring per month - this works out to three sneak peeks per a for members with active Exercise, Spend and Drive rings. A Sneak Peek cannot be carried over to the following week.

What is a Rest Week?

A Rest Week allows you to take a break from your Exercise goal for a week. You need to achieve 25 consecutive exercise goals to earn a Rest Week. Your Rest Week does not expire and can be used at any time for when you are unable to achieve your current or previous exercise goal. It cannot be used to complete a future dated goal or a goal that has passed more than one goal cycle.

Can I use a Rest Week for a missed goal two weeks ago?

You can only apply a Rest Week to the current or previous week and cannot apply a Rest Week to a goal that has passed more than one goal cycle. If you want to apply a Rest Week to a given goal week, you will need to do so before the following Tuesday at midnight before the next Rewards Wednesday.

Partner spend tiles
What are Pharmacy tiles on the gameboard?

Pharmacy tiles give you rewards for your pharmacy purchases at our pharmacy partners. When you reveal a Pharmacy tile on your gameboard, you will earn your highest purchase from Clicks or Dis-Chem from the previous week in Discovery Miles on a 1:1 rands to Discovery Miles ratio.

For example, if your maximum pharmacy spend transaction for last week was R1,000, and you select a Pharmacy tile on the gameboard, you will be able to earn 1,000 Discovery Miles. The pharmacy tile is capped at a maximum earn of 1,500 Discovery Miles per week, based on your Discovery Bank account.

What are Fuel tiles on the gameboard?

Fuel tiles give you rewards for your fuel purchases at our fuel partners. When you reveal a Fuel tile on your gameboard, you will earn Discovery Miles on your highest purchase at BP garages and select Shell garages for the previous week on a 1:1 rands to Discovery Miles ratio.

For example, if your maximum fuel spend transaction for last week was R1,000, and you select a Fuel tile on the gameboard, you will earn 1,000 Discovery Miles. The fuel tile is capped at a maximum earn of 1,500 Discovery Miles per week based on your Discovery Bank account.

What are Grocery tiles on the gameboard?

Grocery tiles give you rewards for your purchases at our grocery partners. When you reveal a Grocery tiles on your gameboard, you will earn your highest purchase at Checkers or Woolworths from the previous week in Discovery Miles on a 1:1 rands to Discovery Miles ratio.

For example, if your maximum grocery spend transaction for last week was R1,000, and you select a Grocery tile on the gameboard, you will be able to earn 1,000 Discovery Miles. The Grocery tile is capped at a maximum earn of 1,500 Discovery Miles per week, based on your Discovery Bank account.

How do you calculate the value of the tiles?

We use the highest purchase spend from the week before for each spend category (groceries, pharmacy, fuel). These purchases are recorded once a transaction at a partner store is processed. The amount for each spend category is then converted to Discovery Miles on a 1:1 rand to Discovery Miles ratio. For example, a spend of R500 will be converted to 500 Discovery Miles.

What is the Discovery tile?

The Discovery tile appears based on the number of additional Discovery products you have, allowing you to earn up to 750 Discovery Miles when this tile is revealed on the gameboard. The value of your Discovery tile is based on the products you have with different Discovery businesses:

  • Discovery Bank
  • Discovery Health
  • Discovery Life
  • Discovery Insure
  • Discovery Invest

Vitality Active Rewards Spend goal

What are Vitality Active Rewards Spend goals?

Along with encouraging and rewarding you for getting healthier and driving well, Vitality Active Rewards also encourages and rewards you for saving and spending responsibly with a Vitality Money Rewards money goal.

When you achieve your money goal, you'll get rewarded with a play on the gameboard and a chance to earn Discovery Miles - our one rewards currency that you can spend on a range of exciting rewards of your choice.

How do I achieve my Spend goal?

The Spend goal follows the same principles already applied to your Exercise and Drive goals, where you have a weekly, personalised goal target that increases or decreases based on your previous weeks' achievement history.

This means:

  1. Reaching your goal will be based on weekly spend where every R10 spent is 1 point towards your Spend goal, regardless of the number or size of your transactions.
  2. Spend towards your weekly goal starts at 0 every week, with no more carry-over of Spend points week to week. If you overachieve, your goal you will get a Sneak Peek of a tile on the gameboard, allowing you to change your chosen tile and try to hit a higher value tile.
  3. Your personal goal target will increase if your spend increases, and decreases if you consistently don't achieve your goal.

Your Spend goal is only unlocked if you maintain a minimum savings account balance. The Spend goal rewards you for consolidating your spend within Discovery Bank.

The Spend goal vary based on the average spend expected at your income level, based on whether you're a Gold, Platinum, Black, or Purple client, or have a Ðiscovery Account. These amounts are in line with the qualifying spend already applied for all your other Vitality Money dynamic lifestyle, travel, and integration rewards.

When do my transactions count towards my Spend goal?

We only count your transactions once they have been cleared, and not on the date of your transaction.

By measuring qualifying spend for Vitality Active Rewards this way, we can provide you with a more accurate view of your Spend points. This lowers the chances of your earned points being reduced later if the final processed amount changes.

Why do my transactions have to clear before I earn spend points?

When you spend with your Discovery Bank card, transactions show up as "pending" in the linked account's transaction list quickly. Sometimes merchants can take a few days to request funds from us, and for the transaction to be cleared. During that time, the final amount could change due to things like merchant holding fees, refunds, tips, and currency exchange rate fluctuations. Once a transaction is processed, we still count it towards the week in which the transaction was made.

While transactions are still pending, you will see these points reflected in your Spend ring as "pending," with a dark grey ring indicating the potential progress they will contribute to closing your Spend ring as soon as they have been processed. For example, if you have R300 of pending transactions in the current goal week, it will say "300 pending" under your Spend ring. Once these transactions have been processed - even if it only happens in the new goal week - they will still count towards the Spend goal for the week in which the transaction took place.

What happens if my transactions only clear after the next Tuesday?

If you have pending transactions that only clear after the Tuesday deadline, we will allocate Spend points retrospectively based on the transaction date once the merchant processes it. This means that even if a transaction is still pending after the Tuesday deadline, it will still count towards your Spend goal if it meets the criteria.

If a Spend goal is achieved retrospectively, you'll receive a play on the gameboard on the next Rewards Wednesday, automatically. There's no need to report anything to Vitality.

If my transaction has not cleared in time to achieve my Spend goal, will you still grant me a gameboard play the following week?

Spend points are allocated retrospectively based on the transaction date once the merchant has processed it. Although these points may still show as 'pending' beyond the Tuesday after the goal week in which the transaction was made, if the Spend goal is retrospectively achieved after processing, a play will be awarded on the gameboard available on the next Rewards Wednesday. You don't need to worry about reporting this to Vitality as this is an automated process.

Why do Spend points not carry over to the next week to achieve my Spend goal?

We've aligned the Spend goal to follow the same principles already applied with your Exercise and Drive goals, which is that every Saturday you start a goal from zero, with no carry-over of points from your previous week's behaviour.

Vitality Active Rewards aims to drive consistent behaviour week-on-week, and in the case of the Spend goal it is to encourage you to use your Discovery Bank card instead of cash, and regularly transact in a way that allows for the Vitality Money Financial Analyser to accurately track your spend and help you remain within your chosen budgeting goals.

In addition, the gameboard is more rewarding than ever before - you can now earn back your spend on groceries, pharmacies, and fuel in Discovery Miles on a 1:1 rands to Discovery Miles ratio, up to a maximum of Ð1,500 per category. And if you manage to achieve two times your weekly Spend goal, you will be eligible for a Sneak Peek. This allows you to momentarily reveal a tile on the gameboard without selecting it, giving you the chance to earn even more Discovery Miles.

What are Discovery Miles?

Discovery Miles is Discovery's shared-value rewards currency that you can earn for getting healthy, driving well and spending responsibly.

You can spend your Discovery Miles at a range of in-store and online partners. You can also redeem them to get vouchers with Vitality Active Rewards, spend them on prepaid products and services, use them for travel, exchange them for cash, and more.

  1. Getting Discovery Miles from HealthyLiving purchases and Vitality rewards.
  2. Earning thousands of Discovery Miles with Vitality Active Rewards.

Where can I spend Discovery Miles?

You can spend your Discovery Miles on just about anything, including:

  1. Spending them on Vitality Active Rewards on the Discovery app.
  2. Shopping with them online and in-store at select partners using the Discovery Bank app.
  3. Spending them on travel by using them for flights, accommodation and package bookings.
  4. Converting them to travel rewards from other travel partner programmes.
  5. Spending them on prepaid services and products, such as airtime, data bundles and electricity.
  6. Monetising them by exchanging them for cash, which is paid straight into your Discovery Bank account.
  7. Using them to pay any of your contacts who have a Discovery Miles account with Discovery Bank.

What are Discovery Miles worth?

You can redeem Discovery Miles at our in-store and online partner network at a rate of 10 Discovery Miles for R1.

You can get even more value from your Discovery Miles when spending them in Vitality Active Rewards where you can get up to 15% off based on your Vitality Health status, or save 15% upfront when redeeming Discovery Miles for prepaid products and services in the Discovery Bank app.

HealthyFood Rewards

How do I earn rewards when making purchases at Checkers and Woolworths?

When you're shopping for qualifying HealthyFood items at Checkers or Woolworths, make sure to use your relevant Checkers Xtra Savings card or Woolworths MyDifference card at the till or online, and pay with your Discovery Bank credit card to receive up to 75% back on your HealthyFood purchases.

You can purchase qualifying HealthyFood items on Checkers Sixty60, Woolworths online, Woolies app and Woolies Dash through your online profile. Please make sure that your Checkers Xtra Savings card and Woolworths MyDifference card are added to your profile before shopping, and remember to pay with your Discovery Bank credit card to receive up to 75% back on your HealthyFood purchases.

How will I be able to maximise my HealthyFood rewards?

You need to activate the HealthyFood benefit and select a primary in-store and primary online partner. To maximise your Vitality Health rewards and get 25% back at your primary partners and 10% back at your secondary partners, you need to find out your Vitality Age and do a Vitality Health Check within the past 12 months. Boosting your individual HealthyFood percentages are based on you completing your own Vitality Age and Vitality Health Check once every rolling 12 months, and not based on any other members on the policy completing their assessments.

To maximise your Vitality Money rewards and get up to 50% back, you need to pay with your Discovery Bank credit card. Rewards are based on the qualifying Discovery Bank product, Vitality Money status, and qualifying monthly credit card spend.

You'll receive your rewards for your current month's purchases in the first two weeks of the following month, paid into your Ðiscovery Miles Account as Ðiscovery Miles.

Can I select different online and in-store HealthyFood primary partners?

You can choose a different online and in-store primary partner at which you will earn up to 75% back on qualifying HealthyFood purchases.

You can select a different primary partner for your online (Checkers Sixty60 and Woolies Dash) and in-store purchases (Checkers and Woolworths). Make sure to have your Checkers Xtra Savings and Woolworths MyDifference cards activated linked to your HealthyFood profile.

How long does a change in HealthyFood primary partners take to be effective?

Changes to your primary partners will be effective from the start of the following month. For example, if you change your primary in-store HealthyFood partner on 4 September from Woolworths to Checkers, you'll earn your maximum rewards for the month of September at Woolworths. And then starting 1 October, you will earn maximum rewards from Checkers as your new primary partner.

How does the HealthyFood benefit work for Discovery Bank clients?

You earn rewards when buying qualifying HealthyFood items from your primary in-store and online partner. This reward will be calculated as follows:

  • 10% upon activation of the HealthyFood benefit through Vitality Health at your primary partners.
  • Increased to 25% by finding out your Vitality Age and doing a Vitality Health Check.
  • Boosted up to 75% as a Discovery Bank client, depending on your Discovery Bank card colour and product.

How do I earn Điscovery Miles on my purchases with the home partners?

To earn Điscovery Miles, you need to pay with your Discovery Bank virtual card at any of our home partner stores, both online or in-store. Your account must be in good standing, and you must have Vitality Money activated. Additionally, you need to have an average annual spend of at least R3,000.

How many Điscovery Miles can I earn at the home partner stores?

Your reward will be based on your product, card colour, Vitality Money status, and average annual spend as of the end of the previous month. You earn at a higher rate when you use your virtual card. Using a physical card or a physical card linked to a digital wallet earns at a lower rate.

When will I get my Điscovery Miles paid into my Điscovery Miles Account?

Điscovery Miles earned from qualifying transactions at home partners will be calculated and deposited into your Điscovery Miles Account after the merchant has successfully banked the transaction and all your transactions from the previous month have been banked. The Điscovery Miles will then be available for you to spend.

How do I receive my home partner network rewards?

You can buy products online or in-store at the partner network. Once your transaction has been banked by the merchant and all your transactions from the previous month have been banked, we will calculate your reward and credit your Điscovery Miles Account.

How can I see my transactions and what are the rewards/ Ðiscovery Miles that I have earned from the home partner network benefit?

You can view the Ðiscovery Miles that you earn in the Discovery Bank app. Simply:

  • Log in to your banking app.
  • Tap your Ðiscovery Miles Account.
  • Tap Transactions.
What items at the home partner network qualify for the reward?

All qualifying spend (in rands) at the home partner network qualifies for the reward. Purchases paid for in Ðiscovery Miles don't qualify for the reward. Only local transactions qualify.

Can I earn Điscovery Miles on purchases made at stores outside the home partner network?

You will not earn your home partner rewards at stores outside of the Home Partner Network. You can only get up to 15% back in Điscovery Miles on qualifying spend transactions at the home partner network stores in South Africa. Purchases of partner products at stores outside the home partner network will not qualify.

Discovery Bank primary accountholders with a Transaction Account with bundled fees, Discovery Bank Credit Card Account or Discovery Bank Suite can earn base Ðiscovery Miles on all qualifying account spend outside of the Home Partner Network. Refer to the Discovery Bank rewards terms and conditions for more information. You will not earn base Điscovery Miles in addition to your home partner rewards at home partner stores.

What happens if I return an item purchased from a home partner store?

If you receive a refund for a qualifying purchase, the corresponding Điscovery Miles will be deducted from your Điscovery Miles Account.

How can I double my reward to up to 30% back?

You can double your reward to up to 30% back if you switch, refinance, or finance your new home with a Discovery Bank Home Loan. This offer is valid for six months from the date an attorney is assigned to home loan applications submitted by 30 September 2025.

I applied for my home loan. When will my reward be doubled?

Your reward is doubled for the first six months from the attorney instruction date. You need to have submitted your application by the 30 September 2025 to be eligible for the campaign. Only the main applicant qualifies for the campaign. If you cancel the home loan, we'll claim back any reward you received from the campaign.

Can I use Điscovery Miles to make purchases at the partner stores?

You can use the Điscovery Miles you've earned to shop at over 40 of our online and in-store Điscovery Miles retail partners and get up to a 15% discount.
