Ensuring our clients are supported and earn rewards during the COVID-19 period

We remain committed to assisting our clients during the COVID-19 period. As a country, we have made significant progress in rolling out the vaccination programme and getting healthcare workers and people who are 60 years and older vaccinated. We are grateful to every South African who has played their part in fighting the spread of the pandemic and encourage everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated.

In response to increasing COVID-19 infections, President Cyril Ramaphosa recently announced that the country will move to adjusted lockdown alert level 4. We recognise that this affects businesses as they face stricter restrictions which often means they have limited ability to generate revenue.

To help our clients face the risks brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, we introduced COVID-19 enhancements to our product last year. We are now extending the following benefits to give our clients the cover and benefits they need during this time. These product enhancements are offered at no additional premium.

Premium relief benefit for restaurant owners

The restaurant industry is one of the industries most affected by the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. In an effort to support this industry, we partnered with the Restaurant Association of South Africa and created a bespoke insurance product for restaurant owners. We also introduced a premium cash back to assist clients with premium affordability during this time. We are now extending this benefit for a further period.

All Discovery Business Insurance clients who have cover under the Restaurant owners' product will get 25% cash back on their non-motor premium every month. This offer is available during lockdown alert level 3 to level 5, or until the end of September 2021, whichever ends first. It is available to both new and existing Discovery Business Insurance clients and it will not affect the broker commission payable on the plan.

Dynamic Distance cash back

We have seen a drop in the mileage driven by our Vitality Drive clients during the COVID-19 lockdown period. As a result, we have seen a reduction in our overall loss ratio. As part of our shared value model of insurance, we reward clients through the savings earned as a result of them driving less.

Vitality Drive for Business clients who drive less during the lockdown period will earn cash back on their vehicle premium every month.

  • Clients who drive less than 250 km in a month will get 25% cash back on their monthly vehicle premium.
  • Clients who drive between 250 km and 499 km in a month will get 15% cash back on their monthly vehicle premium.

In addition, clients will still earn the standard Vitality Drive for Business cash back of up to 30% of their vehicle premium every year based on their driving behaviour.

We will apply the Dynamic Distance cash back on the client's monthly premiums during the various COVID-19 levels until average mileage driven returns to the usual pre-COVID-19 level. For more information on this benefit, read our Dynamic Distance cash back information document.

Cover for businesses working from home

Many businesses have adopted work-from-home strategies during the COVID-19 period. This has changed the nature of business risk. Our enhanced cover is designed to help clients face this adjusted risk.

Protecting the business while employees work from home

We will extend the client's existing cover for the following sections to all their employees' risk addresses to make sure that their business remains adequately protected while their employees work from home:

  • Electronic equipment
  • Office contents
  • Storage of stock
  • Theft
  • Public liability

Protecting business premises while working remotely

We will waive the unoccupancy clause under the Fire and Buildings Combined sections for plans that have this cover. This means that the client's insurance cover will not automatically be suspended after 30 days of the insured building being unoccupied. Clients will also not be liable to pay the 20% proportion of a claim that is usually required during the unoccupancy period.

We will automatically include the loss of water by leakage optional extension to all plans with the Fire and Buildings Combined sections. This means that if there is water leakage and the client is not at the business premises to detect or stop it, they will be covered up to the benefit limit stated in the Plan Guide.

The cover for businesses working from home is available during lockdown alert level 3 to level 5, or until the end of September 2021, whichever ends first. Read our COVID-19 product enhancements one pager for more information about this benefit.

We are committed to supporting our clients and helping them during this challenging period.
