Whether you're a new or experienced driver, the Discovery Driving Academy, at 1 Discovery Place, has a course to enrol in that is geared to ensure that you adopt the very best skills and techniques required for better driving.
What courses are available at the Discovery Driving Academy?
Discovery Insure has now launched state-of-the-art driving simulators aimed at teaching safe driving skills and techniques for both new and more experienced drivers. The simulators, along with an instructor aid in teaching driving techniques within a safe environment.
For new drivers, the academy offers an opportunity to practice the basics of safe driving, while more experienced drivers have the chance to refresh their skills. For both driving groups, the driving simulators provide a real-world experience within an artificial set up, designed to mimic actual scenarios that can be experienced on our roads.
The design of the simulator resembles that of a real car and includes essential components for practical learning, such as an accelerator, clutch, brake, gearbox, steering wheel, indicators and windscreen wipers.
In addition to this simulated-driving experience, Discovery clients will get 25% off the course fee, while Discovery Insure clients will get 50% off the course fee.
For new drivers, there is the Licence Prep course
- Learning how to be aware of a vehicle's various control mechanisms and other cars; as well as road, environmental and traffic conditions
- Understanding and practicing good driving behaviour and defensive driving techniques
- Gaining confidence in good driving behaviours
New drivers will also learn how to use a gear lever on a manual car or the automatic transmission on non-manual vehicles. Instructors will also offer best practice guidance on steering wheel technique and how best to use the three pedals in a vehicle safely and effectively.
The course offers first-time drivers 5 practical hour-long lessons with one-on-one guidance with a qualified instructor.
The course will cover:
- The fundamentals of driving
- Pulling off and changing gears smoothly without stalling
- Driving on different types of roads
- Driving in light to heavy traffic
- Driving at all times during the day
- Driving in different weather conditions, such as rain, fog and mist.
- Combinations of the above scenarios so that drivers get a comprehensive driving experience
For more experienced drivers, there is the Refresher course
Experienced drivers can benefit from:
- Sharpening their defensive driving techniques and application skills, such as speed control, observation skills, and maintaining the correct following and stopping distances within true-to-life driving scenarios
- Learning how to better handle driving on different road / surface types, as well as varying weather and traffic conditions
- An opportunity to address any driving skills concerns with a qualified instructor
- Earning 150 Vitality Drive points every month for 12 months when completing and passing the refresher course
