Vitamins, tennis and a quiet life - a bit of Minnie Kaplan's recipe for living to 100

Minnie Kaplan is one of Discovery Health Medical Scheme's centenarian (people aged 100 years or older) members. Watch Minnie's life story and read all about this remarkable woman.
Minne Kaplan lived to the age of 100, and passed away on 9 April 2026, just a month before her 101st birthday. She shared her story with Discovery Health Medical Scheme shortly before her passing, and her family has given permission for it to be shared in her memory. Minnie was also one of 100 centenarian Discovery Health Medical Scheme members included in a recent Health Intelligence investigation into the health and wellbeing of members aged 100 and older (using data to May 2025). This was the second report of its kind, following the first published in late 2023. Read the full report for more insights.
Minnie Kaplan, who turned 100 in 2025, said she'd lived a quiet life.
Minnie was born in Poland and moved with her family to South Africa when she was four years old.
Minnie had never been seriously ill and believed that eating a balanced diet and exercising helped keep her healthy.
But did she expect to live to 100?
"Never," she said.
"I've been careful with my diet for many, many years. I eat a gluten-free diet."
"I always exercised. I had a tennis court and loved playing tennis."
"My mother took me to piano lessons when I was a little girl." When she was younger, Minnie was also an avid pianist who loved playing classical music.
In her later years, Minne used a wheelchair. She lived with her daughter, Hermione Asherson, who made sure she spent time outdoors.
"My mom loves the fresh air," said Hermione.
Minnie is survived by two daughters, three grandchildren and five grandsons. "They're all wonderful and I love them!" she said.
