How do I claim points?

There are two ways in which you get Vitality Points for Vitality Race Events.

  1. Vitality automatically receives your race data.
    Once we have received the verified data from the timing company or race organiser, your points will be automatically uploaded if you have completed the event. The races where Vitality will automatically receive your race data are listed on the Vitality race events calendar.
  2. You claim online for Vitality Race Events
    For those events that are not included on the Vitality race events calendar and that qualify as timed and verified events, you can upload your results through the self-capture option on the Discovery website. You will need to complete the online form and upload a copy of your race certificate or proof of your results.

    Vitality will then award your points. Please allow for up to four days for the points to reflect. You can view your points on the Vitality Points Tracker .

Why do I need to send my race certificate?
At Discovery Vitality, we have always valued clinically relevant and verifiable data because this helps us to better serve the health of our members..

The self-capture option requires you to upload a PDF of your race certificate or a screenshot of your results to confirm your completion of an event. By receiving verified proof of your successful completion of an event, we are in a position to confirm that you completed the event and can therefore award your points.

Do I have to pay to use this benefit?
There is a R465 annual membership fee for running (without a licence), R135 annual fee for a running licence and a R1,100 annual fee for cycling or R1,565 for members doing both running and cycling).

Running licences are only available for Central Gauteng, Gauteng North, KwaZulu Natal, South West District, Western Province and Eastern Province.

How can I earn Vitality points if my event is not on the Vitality race calendar?
If an event is not on the Vitality Race Events Calendar, you can earn Vitality Points in the following manner:

  1. You claim online for Vitality Race Events
    For those events that are not included on the Vitality race events calendar and that qualify as timed and verified events, you can upload your results through the self-capture option on the Discovery website. You will need to complete the online form and upload a copy of your race certificate or proof of your results.

    Vitality will then award your points. Please allow for up to four days for the points to reflect. You can view your points on the Vitality Points Tracker on the Vitality Points Tracker page.
     
  2. Use a Vitality-linked fitness device
    You can earn by using a Vitality-integrated fitness device or app.

Which person on my membership has activated Team Vitality?
You can see who has activated Team Vitality on the website. Each person on your membership (older than 18) must activate the benefit separately.

Do I get anything if I am a renewal member (not a new activation)?
As a renewal member, you can get Team Vitality VIP hospitality, 50% back on a Strava subscription and 50% back on selected race entry fees. You can also get new kit upon your second renewal.

How do I get my rewards?
We pay your rewards into your chosen bank account at the end of your billing cycle. All the rewards you earn with Team Vitality for each person who has registered will be paid into this account. Discovery Bank members with a qualifying Discovery Bank account, will be paid back in Discovery Miles.

What bank account will my rewards go into?
The main member on Vitality can choose a bank account when activating the benefit. This account will also be used for other benefits that earn you rewards, for example,; HealthyFood. It will default to your Discovery Bank account if you have one or to a bank account linked to the membership. If there are no account details, the main member has to provide account details when activating the benefit.

How do you calculate my rewards?
You will earn rewards after activating Team Vitality and completing an event on the Team Vitality race calendar. You earn up to 50% back on the pre-race registration fee. Please note Team Vitality reserves the right to change the allocated rewards amount on races. Your rewards amount will depend on the type of races that you complete each quarter. You only get rewards if you have completed the event and we have received your verified results from the timing company.

Rewards are paid if the accumulated rewards amount is R50 or more. Any rewards amount that is less than R50 in a month, Vitality will hold this reward for an additional month to allow it to accumulate to more than R50 and be paid out, otherwise this reward will be forfeited.

Which races can I get rewards on?
Our Team Vitality race calendar includes all the qualifying races for rewards. You can use the Team Vitality race calendar to see which races you can enter across the country as a Team Vitality member and get up to 50% back. The races you can earn rewards on have a rewards icon next to them. Please keep an eye on the Team Vitality race calendar, as we will add new events each quarter.

Will I get rewards on late entries (if I enter the race on the morning)?
Yes, you will get rewards on late entries. However, you will only receive up to 50% back (depending on race type) on the original registration fee, not on the late entry fee (if there is an extra fee for registering late).

Availability of licences:

  1. When will my running licence be available?
    If you live in one of the selected regions (Central Gauteng, Gauteng North, KwaZulu Natal, South West District, Western Province and Eastern Province), you will need to collect your licence from one of these venues. We will notify you once the new year's licences are available. In other regions, you can get your licences through your respective club.
  2. When will my cycling licence be available?
    All cyclists need to apply for a Cycling South Africa (CSA) licence by going to the CSA website www.cyclingsa.com. On the website, you will need to apply and pay for your licence. Registration fees for races are not included in the activation fee and must be paid directly to event organisers. As a Team Vitality member, you qualify for all the perks: the starter pack with kit, VIP hospitality and 50% back when you complete selected events on the racing calendar.

 

How do I apply for another licence if I have lost mine?
You can email teamvitality@discovery.co.za to notify us and request a new license.

We will then share our banking details for you to make payment, once complete, we will let you know when you can collect your new licence.

Can I be a part of two running clubs?
Unfortunately, you cannot belong to two running clubs as a licensed runner. Runners in selected regions (Central Gauteng, Gauteng North, KwaZulu Natal, South West District, Western Province and Eastern Province) must resign from their current club and send us their club clearance letter and ASA application form (which is available on the website once you have activated the benefit and would like to be licenced through Team Vitality running club or http://asa.saclubs.co.za/) if you have chosen to buy up to a licence. This information should be sent to teamvitality@discovery.co.za runners in other areas can remain members of their current club because we currently don't offer running licences in these areas.

If you activate Team Vitality in a region where we do not offer licences, you can still get rewards for events on the Team Vitality race calendar. You will also have access to the community information that is on the website and the post-race area at selected events. We will let you know once licences become available in other regions. If you choose to become a Team Vitality member without a licence, you may be a member of another club as a licensed runner. To gain access to our VIP hospitality, you will need to wear your Team Vitality race kit and have an active membership.

What is the domicilium rule?

  1. An athlete will only represent the ASA province where they live.
  2. Except for a national athlete, an athlete will only be a member of a club if the athlete and the club are in the same ASA province.
  3. No athlete may relocate from one province to another without being in possession of a written clearance certificate from his/her their former province entitling him/her them to compete in the new province. Failure to obtain such a clearance certificate will mean the athlete ineligible they will not be able to compete in the new province.

 

Where can I collect my Team Vitality running vest or jersey?
You can use the code from your welcome email to collect your new kit from a Sportsmans Warehouse in:

  • Canal Walk
  • Moffet Retail Park
  • Eden Meander Lifestyle Centre
  • Rondebosch
  • Centurion
  • Fourways
  • Sandton
  • Gateway

You can also have your kit delivered to you for R50 on the Sportsmans Warehouse website.

If I cancel the benefit, do I get a refund?
When you activate Team Vitality and pay the activation fee, there is a "no cancellation" policy on this benefit. Unfortunately, we will not be able to refund you once the activation fee has been paid. If you choose to end the benefit or your Vitality policy, the ordinary rules for the ending a benefit and Vitality membership will apply.

In which provinces is Team Vitality active? Why don't you offer it in my province?
For running, we are applying to ASA to offer licences in all regions. As we secure licences in a region, we will let you know. You can still be part of Team Vitality in other regions but you will have to get your licence through a running club in your region until we can offer running licences in more regions. At the moment, we offer licences for Central Gauteng, Gauteng North, KwaZulu Natal, South West District, Western Province and Eastern Province. Team Vitality for cyclists is active nationwide.

What type of cycling or running support do you provide?
You can access information on the Team Vitality website, Team Vitality running and cycling Strava communities and Team Vitality Facebook running and cycling groups and in the Team Vitality monthly newsletters.

Which events will have hospitality? What type of hospitality will be offered?
Selected events will have a hospitality area where members of Team Vitality can enjoy various benefits and refreshments on offer. These events are communicated in our monthly newsletters. Please remember to RSVP, wear your Team Vitality race kit and have an active Team Vitality membership to gain access.

Why isn't Team Vitality for other sports (swimming, for example)?
Team Vitality mainly focus on running and cycling disciplines due to the popularity of these activities under most of our Vitality member base.

I activated Team Vitality online. What is the progress of my application?
Once you have made payment and it was successful, you are part of Team Vitality. You will get a welcome email within a few days. This email will confirm your registration and provide you with information about your kit collection.

I completed a race. Why didn't I get my points?
We need to verify your race completion details with the timing company before we allocate your points. Points should reflect within a week of the race date.

How long will my points take to reflect?
We need to verify your race completion details before we allocate your points. Your points should appear on the Vitality Points Tracker within a week of the event date.

Can I use my running number from last year?
You have to use a new licence every year, if you are a renewing member, we will make every effort to make sure you get the same licence. Unfortunately, you are not guaranteed that you will get the same licence because Athletics South Africa (ASA) doesn't always distribute the same licences as the previous year. We therefore apologise in advance if you don't receive the same licence number. In Central Gauteng, Gauteng North, KwaZulu Natal, South West District, Western Province and Eastern Province, this has to be a licence from Team Vitality. The ASA application form is available on the website at the end of the activation process as well as on the Team Vitality page once your benefit is activated successfully. You may also complete this form online on the ASA website According to ASA regulations, until we have received your ASA application form and your clearance letter (if you are currently a member of another club), we will not be able to send you your licence. You will need to purchase a temporary licence for events. In other regions, you can apply through your current running club or use a temporary licence for races.

How do I enter races on the Team Vitality race calendar?
You must register for events on the race website, not the Team Vitality website. You should also refer to the specific race website for details of any rules for race registration as created by the race event company.

What if my timing chip didn't work on race day?
If there was a problem with your timing chip on race day, we won't be able to confirm your results.

Unfortunately, we cannot award you with points or rewards unless you get confirmation of your results from the timing company. If they are able to verify that you completed the race, they will need to send us your results so that we can award your points manually.

Please note - all members are responsible for checking their timing chips are on working order.

What is my username and password for the Cycling South Africa website?
Cycling South Africa (CSA) will send you your username and password via by email once you have applied for your licence with them.

I lost my cycling licence card. How do I get a replacement?
You can log in to the CSA website for more details.

Does my Team Vitality activation include my cycling racing licence?
All cyclists need to apply for a CSA licence by going to the CSA website www.cyclingsa.com On the website, you will need to apply and pay for your licence. Registration fees for races are not included in the activation fee and must be paid directly to event organisers. As a Team Vitality member, you qualify for all the perks: the starter pack with kit, VIP hospitality and 50% back when you complete selected events on the racing calendar.

Do I have to cycle and run in the kit provided?
If you selected cycling when you registered, you must take part in the Team Vitality kit. If you selected running when you registered and you are in a region where we provide licences, you would need to complete your races in Team Vitality race kit provided. If you have not yet received your running vest, you can wear an unbranded shirt of a neutral colour until you receive your race shirt. If you are part of a running club in a region where we don't offer a licence, you may have to run in your running club colours. To get access into our VIP hospitality, you will need to wear your Team Vitality race kit.

Why do you need a clearance letter from my old club?
According to ASA regulations, a member may not join another club without submitting a clearance letter from their previous club if you want a licence with us in applicable regions.

How many Vitality points do I earn for Team Vitality races?
You can earn a maximum of 30 000 fitness points in a year, including points earned for completing a Vitality race event. For more information about Vitality points, please refer to the Vitality race events benefit guide.

Why can't I get a specific licence number?
Unfortunately, we cannot request a specific licence number on your behalf unless it is your previous year's number, and you are a renewal Team Vitality member. It is legislated that a member runs with the licence number granted to them by the provincial bodies. A member running with the incorrect licence number will be disqualified from the race. You are responsible to make sure you run under the licence that ASA approved in your application.

Why can't my child who is not yet 18 activate the Team Vitality benefit and receive rewards?
According to current South African legislation, a company may not contract with a minor (who is under 18 years of age). A minor with an active Junior Team Vitality benefit does not earn Vitality points but can earn Discovery Miles by getting active through partner workouts (at Virgin Active or Planet Fitness gyms, and parkrun) and outdoor race events, kids can earn up to 25 Discovery Miles per activity, capped at 200 Miles per month.

How do I get my Team Vitality cycling kit?
You can use the code from your welcome email to collect your new kit from a Sportsmans Warehouse in:

How do I activate the Junior Team Vitality benefit?
Complete the application form and pay the registration fee by EFT. Thereafter you can email your application form and proof of payment to teamvitality@discovery.co.za. Upon activation you will receive a welcome email from Team Vitality which will give you access to the voucher codes to redeem your Team Vitality kit.

Can my child join Junior Team Vitality cycling too?
Unfortunately, the Junior Team Vitality benefit is only available for running at this stage.

Can my child be a part of two running clubs?
It is against the governing body rules of Athletics South Africa (ASA) for any member to belong to two running clubs. Runners in selected regions (Central Gauteng, Gauteng North, KwaZulu Natal, South West District, Western Province and Eastern Province) must resign from their current club and get a clearance letter from their current club. Email your clearance letter to teamvitality@discovery.co.za when you activate the Junior Team Vitality Benefit. Runners in other areas can remain members of their current club because we currently don't offer running licences in these areas.

How do I unsubscribe from the Junior Team Vitality newsletters?
As part of Junior Team Vitality, you will receive emails, newsletters and more on behalf of your child. You can unsubscribe from specific communication by sending an email to teamvitality@discovery.co.za As part of legislation, we may not unsubscribe you from communication where we inform you of any changes to the benefit.

How many Vitality points does my child earn for Junior Team Vitality races?
Junior Team Vitality members do not earn Vitality points but can earn Discovery Miles by getting active through partner workouts (at Virgin Active or Planet Fitness gyms, and parkrun) and outdoor race events, kids can earn up to 25 Discovery Miles per activity, capped at 200 Miles per month.
