What is Discovery Miles?
Discovery Miles is our new rewards currency which can be used to spend on a range of exciting rewards of your choice.

How do I earn Discovery Miles?
Vitality members earn Discovery Miles when they achieve their Vitality Active Rewards goals. You instantly earn 100 Discovery Miles for each goal, so if you achieve all your weekly exercise, drive and money goals you can earn 300 instant Discovery Miles. Plus, you earn a play on the gameboard for every goal you achieve. If you achieve all 3 goals, you earn a bonus play on the gameboard. Additional Discovery Miles can be earned on the gameboard.

Why did you change Vitality reward points to Discovery Miles?
We have migrated to Discovery Miles to reward you with instant rewards upon achieving your Vitality Active Rewards goals. Since you can also earn Discovery Miles through Discovery Bank, you have even more Discovery Miles to spend on rewarding yourself.

When do Discovery Miles expire?
Discovery Miles expire after 5 years from date of issue.

When will my Vitality reward points change to Discovery Miles?
On 11 January, your Vitality reward points was exchanged at a rate of 1 Vitality reward point = 6 Discovery Miles, and if you have a hundred or more Vitality Reward points you will get an extra play on the gameboard the following week after the update to Discovery Miles. As an added bonus, Discovery Miles remain valid for 5 whole years.

How many Discovery Miles are needed for a coffee or smoothie?
Visit the Discovery app to see how many Discovery Miles you need to redeem each reward.

Why does my reward cost me more now that the conversion from Vitality reward points to Discovery Miles has been implemented?
The value at an individual level will vary because of the “gamified” nature of Vitality Active Rewards. The move to Discovery Miles is a significant overall investment by Vitality in the programme and the associated changes are all designed to address much of the feedback that we have received from members to make the programme more valuable and engaging. In particular, members will get enhanced value from Discovery Miles in the form of increased flexibility and longevity, while still being able to earn a coffee or immediate reward every week. We will also continue to add to the programme with surprise and other bonus rewards. All of these enhancements, along with the fact that Discovery Miles gives members the opportunity to “cash in” on their better health, driving and financial management, are all positive.

Visit the Discovery app to see how many Discovery Miles you need to redeem each reward.

What will happen to the diamonds I have earned?
If you had two or more diamonds on 1 January 2020, they would have been replaced with a play on the gameboard. 1 diamond = 1 play on the gameboard.

How do I earn plays?
You earn a play for each exercise, drive or money goal you achieve. A play allows you to pick a tile on the Vitality Active Rewards gameboard to reveal Discovery Miles. You can spend your Discovery Miles on a range of rewards in the Discovery app or at our online or in-store shopping partners, if you’re a qualifying Discovery Bank client.

When will I receive my play?
Your play will be available the Wednesday after you achieve your goal.

Discovery Miles Bank FAQs for Vitality members with Discovery Bank and Vitality Active Rewards

How can I open a Discovery Miles account?
As a Discovery Bank client, you do not need to activate Discovery Miles. You automatically receive a Discovery Miles account with your qualifying Discovery Bank account.

Once you get your Discovery Bank account and activate it, we automatically open a Discovery Miles account for you.

Explain the difference between Vitality Active Rewards goals and Vitality Money goals ?
The Vitality Active Rewards programme has weekly goals. The money goal promotes responsible spending by rewarding you for swipes from your qualifying Discovery Bank card, while maintaining a minimum required Discovery savings balance. Spend a minimum of R20 on a single purchase to accumulate Discovery Miles towards your money goal.

Earn points and improve your Vitality Money status by achieving these monthly goals. By achieving your goals you can increase your savings, improve your financial knowledge, or both. At the start of each month, you’ll get up to two personal goals. The number and type of goals available will depend on improvements that need to be made. You can attempt one or both of your goals each month and will earn points based on how many goals you have achieved over a four-month period.

How does my weekly money goal work?
The goal cycle is from midnight on Friday until midnight, the following Friday. However, if you haven’t achieved your goal by the end of the weekly cycle, your progress towards your goal will be carried over to the next weekly cycle. If you achieve your money goal before the end of the weekly cycle, your transactions after achieving your goal will carry over to the next weekly cycle up to a maximum of double your money goal.

How do I earn Discovery Miles?

YES! The Discovery Miles you earn from Active Rewards is paid into your Discovery Miles account together with the Discovery Miles you earn from swiping. You can use your Discovery Miles earned from anywhere in the Discovery ecosystem to spend on rewards in Vitality Active Rewards.

The Vitality Active Rewards money goal incentivises people to swipe more (in other words, spending more), is this in-line with helping people manage their debt?
We know that our clients are spending regularly, and we want to reward you for using your Discovery Bank card, which is an efficient, safe and convenient method of payment. Vitality Active Rewards has been designed to keep your Discovery Bank card top of mind and maximise your benefits, ensuring a balance between spending and saving. Importantly, however, we want to encourage responsible spending, which means we don’t want your day-to-day spending to impact your savings levels. If your savings levels drop below a minimum level, your money ring will reset.

You will lose Vitality Money points if your behaviour causes your financial health to deteriorate. You can check your Vitality Money points and status on the Discovery Bank app to see what impact these changes have on your financial health. As a behavioural bank, Discovery Bank works with Vitality Money to help you bank better and reward you for reaching your financial goals. Because of this, we have built Vitality Money into the Discovery Bank product selection.

Will my 36 gym visits requirement affect my Vitality Active Rewards?
No, they will not affect Vitality Active Rewards.

Is there a limit to the rewards or points I can earn?
Yearly limits for fitness points only apply to your Vitality status, not to Vitality Active Rewards. This means that all fitness points will count towards reaching your weekly Active Rewards goals, whether or not you have reached 30 000 base fitness points, the yearly limit for Vitality fitness points. This is to keep you motivated to earn Vitality Active Rewards all throughout the year. Keep doing fitness activities to earn Vitality points! Daily points limits do apply such that if more than one fitness activity is completed in one day, only the higher points earning activity will count for points for that day – this rule applies to yearly limits and to Vitality Active Rewards.

  • The Vitality Points Tracker is on the Discovery website discovery.co.za and shows all your Vitality points-earning activities including fitness points, points for doing assessments or for buying HealthyFood.
  • The Activity History under Vitality Active Rewards on the Discovery app only shows the Vitality fitness points you’ve earned that count towards your weekly Vitality Active Rewards goal. Any difference in points is due to the annual fitness points limit which does not apply to Vitality Active Rewards but does apply to Vitality status.

Why does my friend have a different goal from mine?
Goals are personalised to your activity levels, health status and the cardiovascular review that you may be asked to complete when you activate Vitality Active Rewards.

By when do I need to sync my device or app to receive my reward?
You need to sync your fitness device or app to Vitality within your weekly goal cycle, which ends each Friday at 12:00 PM. If you don’t sync your device or app before your goal cycle expires, you won’t receive your points and so won’t reach your weekly goal to earn that week’s reward.

What happens if I join Vitality Active Rewards on a Friday? Do I get an extension on my goal?
The fitness points you earned in the week before you activated Vitality Active Rewards will count towards your goal.

I did the necessary fitness events to achieve my goal but the points are not reflecting and I haven’t received my reward?

  • Make sure your Vitality points have synced with Vitality before the goal cycle closes every Friday at midnight. We allow until midnight on Tuesday night for data to come through before issuing rewards on Wednesday morning.
  • If you are using a device or participating in a Vitality Race Event, sync your device or capture your race event points before the goal cycle closes on Friday night. If you did this and it still doesn’t reflect, contact the Vitality call centre on 0860 99 88 77.
  • If you choose to get active at a fitness facility with a Vitality iPad device, make sure you log in to the app with your Vitality membership number.
  • If you track your fitness activities on a fitness device or app, make sure your fitness device or app is linked to Vitality and that you sync it in time to reach your weekly goal.

Why is there a delay in my points being awarded?

  • Each weekly goal cycle runs from Friday midnight to the next Friday midnight.
  • This means that you need to earn your fitness points each weekly goal by Friday, 00:00PM.
  • These Vitality points may not reflect right away, but as long as you have captured your points – synced your device, checked in on the iPad points device at your fitness facility, earned your points at a parkrun event or captured your Vitality race event – before Friday midnight, then your points will count towards that week’s goal.
  • We allow until Tuesday midnight for the points you’ve earned by Friday midnight the previous week to reflect.
  • Rewards are only awarded on Wednesday so that there is enough time for the points you earned to pull through.

If I work out on a Friday, will my points reflect before the goal cycle closes that night?
Your Vitality points may not reflect right away, but as long as you have captured your points – synced your device or captured your Vitality Race Events results – before Friday midnight then your points will count towards that week’s goal.

If I achieve more Vitality fitness points than required to reach my goal will those points count as credit towards next week’s goal?
No, you need to earn the required amount of Vitality points each week in order to achieve your goal for that week. Extra points will not be carried over from a previous week’s goal.

Why did my new weekly goal increase when I didn’t achieve my last goal?
Vitality Active Rewards sets each weekly goal that takes your entire Vitality Active Rewards history into account. This means that it’s possible for your goal to increase even if you didn’t reach your goal in the last cycle, depending on all your previous goal cycles. It is also possible for your goal to remain the same even if you achieved it the previous week.

How do I view which activities or events Vitality has received data for?
You can view your activities in the ‘Activity History’ section on your Vitality Active Rewards home screen in the Discovery app.

I reversed my QR code and now it doesn’t work. Can I get a new one?

You can then call the Vitality call centre on 0860 99 88 77 and inform them that your reward was reversed. What are fitness days?
Fitness days are any day where you have earned at least 100 Vitality fitness points. This could include visiting the gym, tracking 100 or more steps using a Vitality-linked fitness device, or tracking a workout using a Vitality-linked fitness device.

Why does Vitality track performance metrics like fitness days and points?
You can track your own performance and try to improve your stats over time. You can also use these metrics to compare yourself to your friends and other Vitality Active Rewards members.

Can I gift my Apple Watch to someone else?
You can, but remember that if you do so, your personal Vitality Active Rewards goals will still be used for this benefit. This means that if you don’t meet your commitment to achieve all your weekly Vitality Active Rewards goals for 24 months, it will be considered a breach of your warranty and your own primary Discovery Card will be deducted monthly, as applicable.

Can my Vitality Active Rewards with Apple Watch benefit be cancelled?
It can, if you breach your warrantee. Your Vitality Active Rewards with Apple Watch benefit will be cancelled if:

  • You cancel your benefit, your Vitality Health policy, your Vitality Active Rewards benefit, or your primary Discovery Card;
  • You downgrade to a Vitality Health policy or Discovery Card that does not cater for this benefit;
  • You reduce the straight or credit card limit of your Discovery Card to lower than the limit required to be eligible for this benefit;
  • Your primary qualifying Discovery Card is no longer in good standing.
  • View the Vitality Active Rewards with Apple Watch benefit guide for more information.
  • If your benefit is cancelled, your activation fee will not be refunded and you cannot return your Apple Watch to Discovery Vitality. You will then become liable for the full remaining cost of your Apple Watch which Discovery Vitality will collect from your primary Discovery Card.
If you would like to settle the remaining cost for your Apple Watch, please log into www.discovery.co.za and send us a query through the Vitality Help page.

If you choose to go directly to the iStore and trade in your current Apple Watch without paying the remaining costs still owed on your current Apple Watch, you will still be under obligation to pay the applicable monthly penalty amount.

I am due an Apple Watch penalty refund, when can I expect my refund?
Apple Watch penalty refunds are run weekly after the Apple Watch billing date of the 10th of the month. Your refund will reflect in your Discovery Card and you will receive a notification once your refund has been processed.

I received an Apple Watch penalty SMS notification and an SMS indicating the reversal of the Apple Watch penalty amount.
We send two Apple Watch penalty notifications, the first notification indicates that the penalty amount has been reserved, the second notification is sent when the penalty amount is deducted to reverse the reserved funds. You are only deducted for one penalty amount.

Is there a monthly fee that I need to pay for the Apple Watch?
If you meet all your weekly Vitality Active Rewards exercise goals for 24 months, Discovery Vitality will fund your Apple Watch in full. If you don’t meet your goals, your primary Discovery Card will be deducted by a monthly penalty amount that is calculated as a percentage of the retail price.

For example, the table below is based on a retail price of R7 400. If you didn’t meet all your goals in a month, your Discovery Card would be deducted by up to R308.33 a month for 24 months (pricing subject to change). If you achieved three of your four Vitality Active Rewards goals that month, just R154.16 would be debited due to your engagement in Vitality Active Rewards.

Weekly Vitality Active Rewards goals met in a month 0-1 2 3 4
The monthly amount (penalty) that will be deducted from your primary Discovery Card (for 24 months) 100% 75% 50% 0% (Discovery Vitality will fund the monthly amount for your Watch in full)

My Apple Watch penalty amount is incorrect.
Your Apple Watch penalty amount is calculated based on the number of weekly Vitality Active Rewards goals you achieved in a month. This amount is calculated as a percentage of the retail price of Apple Watch Series 3 or Apple Watch Series 5 at time of collection from iStore.

For an example on how to calculate the Apple Watch monthly amount, please look at the benefit guide.

If your Discovery Card has been deducted with the incorrect Apple Watch penalty amount, go to the Discovery App and navigate to Activity History under Vitality Active Rewards to verify that the Activity History is reflecting the correct number of goals achieved in the month.

If the Activity History is reflecting the

  • Incorrect number of goals achieved, please log a query below to have your goals corrected. Once your goals have been rectified, if a refund is due, this will be calculated and paid into your Discovery Card on a Friday.

Apple’s groundbreaking health and fitness companion, Apple Watch, combined with Vitality Active Rewards will help motivate and encourage you to get more active.

Vitality Active Rewards has been designed to work seamlessly with your Apple Watch. While Apple Watch measures and tracks your activity, Vitality Active Rewards sets your weekly personalised exercise goals and rewards you for achieving them.

As a Vitality member, you can fully fund your Apple Watch by achieving all your weekly Vitality Active Rewards exercise goals for 24 months.

What will I need to pay to activate the Vitality Active Rewards with Apple Watch benefit?
You’ll need to pay a non-refundable activation fee of R999 using your qualifying primary Discovery Card.

Who qualifies for the Vitality Active Rewards with Apple Watch benefit?
To qualify for this benefit:

  • You need an iPhone 6s or a later model to use Apple Watch.
  • You need to have activated Vitality Active Rewards. If you haven’t yet activated the benefit, do so by downloading the latest version of the Discovery app and accessing Vitality Active Rewards under Vitality.
  • You must have a qualifying Discovery Card (either the previous Discovery Card, or a new Discovery Card with Discovery Bank): a Discovery Gold, Platinum, Black, Purple or Purple Wealth Card that is in good standing.
  • You can also call us on 0860 99 88 77. If you do have a qualifying Discovery Card, it must be in good standing. If you would like to join Discovery Bank and get a new Discovery Card, you can learn more here.
  • Your qualifying Discovery Card must have a straight or credit card limit of at least R15 000 and an available balance of at least R5 000 after paying the R999 Apple Watch activation fee and when you collect your Apple Watch Series 3 Aluminium Case Sport 38mm (including Nike+ Aluminium Case Sport 38mm) or Apple Watch Series 5 Aluminium Case Sport 40mm (including Nike+ Aluminium Case Sport 40mm) from iStore. You can request a limit increase online or on 0860 99 88 77
  • Only the main member OR spouse OR adult dependant (21 years or older) on a policy qualify for the benefit.
  • You need to pay a non-refundable activation fee of R999 with your Discovery Card.
  • You can buy one Apple Watch per Vitality Health policy in a 24-month period

Why is my Apple Watch penalty amount so high?
The reason for a higher penalty amount is that Vitality could not deduct your Discovery Card with the Apple Watch penalty amount for the previous Apple Watch goal cycle to various reasons such as: insufficient funds, frozen accounts etc. In instances where Vitality cannot deduct your Discovery Card for the above mentioned reason, Vitality will deduct your Discovery Card account with the outstanding Apple Watch penalty amount and the full monthly penalty fee for the current Apple Watch goal cycle, even though you may have reached all your goals in the current Apple Watch goal cycle.

Illustrative example: Apple Watch goal cycle for January 2020 – you achieved 2 goals and therefore your Apple Watch penalty for this cycle is 75%. Vitality was unable to deduct your Discovery Card due to insufficient funds on the 10th February 2020. You have an outstanding Apple Watch penalty of 75%. In the February Apple Watch goal cycle you achieved all 4 goals and you would not have had any penalty amount deducted to your Discovery Card on 10th March. However, because you have an outstanding penalty amount from your January Apple Watch goal cycle of 75%, the goals you achieved in February will not be taken into account and you will be deducted the outstanding Apple Watch penalty for January (75%) + the full monthly penalty for February (100%) on the 10th March 2020.

Why is the benefit only applicable to Apple Watch and not Android devices?
The Vitality Active Rewards with Apple Watch benefit is part of a global collaboration with Apple, and so is currently only available with Apple Watch Series 3 and Series 5.

Vitality does cater for various device preferences – members can use their preferred fitness device or app to track their activity and earn Vitality Active Rewards by linking their device or app to Vitality.

Members can download the latest version of the Discovery app onto their iOS or Android smartphone to activate Vitality Active Rewards.

Also, with Vitality HealthyCare and HealthyGear, Vitality members can get up to 25% cash back on various fitness devices through our partner stores.

Why was my Apple Watch penalty amount not deducted to my Discovery Card this month?
There are various reasons as to why your Discovery Card was not deducted with an Apple Watch penalty amount, these are:

  • You achieved all your weekly Active Rewards goals in the previous month.
  • Your Apple Watch billing cycle has not started.
  • You received an Apple Watch Welcome notification that incorrectly indicated the Apple Watch goal period that would be used to calculate your Apple Watch penalty. To ensure that you were not prejudiced we moved your Apple Watch Billing cycle to match what was communicated to you in your Welcome notification.
  • You haven’t collected your Apple Watch. The Apple Watch billing cycle only starts the next full month after collecting your Apple Watch.

Will I be able to return my Apple Watch?
Returns on Apple Watch will be governed by the distributor’s policies. To view these, visit www.istoreonline.co.za. If you return your Apple Watch, your R999 activation fee will not be refunded.

What does this benefit offer Vitality members?
You can earn Vitality Active Rewards for reaching weekly, personalised fitness goals that automatically adjust based on factors including your past goal achievements. Rewards include drinks from KAUAI, Mugg & Bean and vida e caffè, and popcorn from Ster-Kinekor.
