Description

How does the benefit work?

  • Step 1: Download the latest version of the Discovery app

Activate Vitality Active Rewards through the Discovery app. Set up your profile and add an unlimited number of Vitality friends to compete against, challenge and track against your own weekly progress, and win more prizes with leaderboards.

  • Step 2: Get active

Vitality will set a weekly, personalised fitness goal for you, based on your current health and fitness levels. Log into the Discovery app and start earning points by getting active with our Vitality fitness partners.

  • Step 3: Get rewarded

Each time you achieve your weekly goal, you’ll earn a weekly Vitality Active Reward – like coffee, smoothie or popcorn reward that you can redeem right away! If you achieve a goal streak of 3 weeks, you’ll earn a chance to spin the wheel to get a surprise reward. Surprise rewards range from coffees or smoothies (core rewards), shopping rewards (bonus rewards), gadgets and kitchen accessories (retail rewards), weekends away (grand prizes) and dream holidays.

How do I achieve my goal each week?
You achieve your goal by earning Vitality fitness points in ways that suit you, like visiting Vitality fitness partners or tracking a workout by linking a fitness device or app to your Vitality profile. Goals are updated weekly based on past performance, as well as factors like fitness level and risk category. You’ll be able to track your progress in the Discovery app as you work on reaching each goal.

Is there a limit to the rewards or points I can earn?
Yearly limits for fitness points only apply to your Vitality status, not to Vitality Active Rewards. This means that all fitness points will count towards reaching your weekly Active Rewards goals, whether or not you have reached 30 000 base fitness points, the yearly limit for Vitality fitness points. This is to keep you motivated to earn Vitality Active Rewards all throughout the year. Keep doing fitness activities to earn Vitality points! Daily points limits do apply such that if more than one fitness activity is completed in one day, only the higher points earning activity will count for points for that day – this rule applies to yearly limits and to Vitality Active Rewards.

Will my 36 gym visits requirement affect my Vitality Active Rewards?
No, they will not affect Vitality Active Rewards.

If I activate Vitality Active Rewards, will this give me access to Vitality gym and fitness partners?
No, you need to activate each gym and fitness benefit separately, as certain terms and conditions will apply. If you have activated the gym and fitness benefits, you can use those partner facilities to earn Vitality Active Rewards points. For more information, click here.

How many friends can I invite to Vitality Active Rewards?
You can add an unlimited number of Vitality friends to compete against, challenge and track against your own weekly progress, and win more prizes with leaderboards.

What Vitality Active Rewards do I earn?
For achieving your weekly fitness goal, you’ll be rewarded weekly with free drinks from KAUAI, Mugg & Bean or vida e caffè, or popcorn from Ster-Kinekor. If you achieve a goal streak of 3 goals in a row, you will be able to spin the wheel to earn additional rewards including meals, flights, car hire and accommodation.

How do I find the Vitality Active Rewards benefit on the Discovery app?
Get started by making sure you have the latest version of the Discovery app on your mobile device. Download or update your Discovery app to the latest version on the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Log in to the app using the username and password that you used to register your profile on the Discovery website and then navigate to the Vitality page in the app. Tap on Vitality Active Rewards and follow the prompts to activate the benefit.

How long is my reward valid for?
Rewards will become available to select on the Wednesday after you achieve your goal and will expire two weeks after they became available. You have two weeks from when you earn your surprise reward on the Wednesday following the goal cycle your goal streak was achieved in, to be able to spin and select a surprise reward. You will be able to spin the wheel to select a surprise reward after achieving a 3-in-a-row goal streak. These rewards have various expiry dates and terms and conditions. Please always check the terms and condition of your reward for the expiry date. For more information, view the benefit guides below:

Why is there a difference between my Vitality Points Monitor (Activity History on the Vitality website) and the Vitality Active Rewards Activity History?

  • The Vitality Points Monitor is on the Discovery website discovery.co.za and shows all your Vitality points-earning activities including fitness points, points for doing assessments or for buying HealthyFood.
  • The Activity History under Vitality Active Rewards on the Discovery app only shows the Vitality fitness points you’ve earned that count towards your weekly Vitality Active Rewards goal. Any difference in points is due to the annual fitness points limit which does not apply to Vitality Active Rewards but does apply to Vitality status.

Why does my friend have a different goal from mine?
Goals are personalised to your activity levels, health status and the cardiovascular review that you may be asked to complete when you activate Vitality Active Rewards.

By when do I need to sync my device or app to receive my reward?
You need to sync your fitness device or app to Vitality within your weekly goal cycle, which ends each Friday at 12:00 PM. If you don’t sync your device or app before your goal cycle expires, you won’t receive your points and so won’t reach your weekly goal to earn that week’s reward.

I achieved my goal, when will I receive my reward?
You’ll receive your reward on the Wednesday of the week after you achieved your goal.

How do you calculate my goal each week?
Goals are personalised to your activity levels, health status and the cardiovascular review that you may be asked to complete when you activate Vitality Active Rewards.

I received an invite on email from a friend to join their Vitality Active Rewards network but can’t find the invite in the app?
Make sure you have activated the Vitality Active Rewards benefit on your Discovery app. You’ll need to have the latest version of the Discovery app installed on your Apple or Android smartphone. Then go back to the friend invite email on your mobile device and tap the ‘Accept’ button. You will be taken to the friends section of Vitality Active Rewards on your Discovery app. Here you’ll see the invite from your friend and you’ll be able to accept or decline it.

What happens if I join Vitality Active Rewards on a Friday? Do I get an extension on my goal?
The fitness points you earned in the week before you activated Vitality Active Rewards will count towards your goal.

I did the necessary fitness events to achieve my goal but the points are not reflecting and I haven’t received my reward?

  • Make sure your Vitality points have synced with Vitality before the goal cycle closes every Friday at midnight. We allow until midnight on Tuesday night for data to come through before issuing rewards on Wednesday morning.
  • If you are using a device or participating in a Vitality Race Event, sync your device or capture your race event points before the goal cycle closes on Friday night. If you did this and it still doesn’t reflect, contact the Vitality call centre on 0860 99 88 77.
  • If you choose to get active at a fitness facility with a Vitality iPad device, make sure you log in to the app with your Vitality membership number.
  • If you track your fitness activities on a fitness device or app, make sure your fitness device or app is linked to Vitality and that you sync it in time to reach your weekly goal.

Why is there a delay in my points being awarded?

  • Each weekly goal cycle runs from Friday midnight to the next Friday midnight.
  • This means that you need to earn your fitness points each weekly goal by Friday, 00:00PM.
  • These Vitality points may not reflect right away, but as long as you have captured your points – synced your device, checked in on the iPad points device at your fitness facility, earned your points at a parkrun event or captured your Vitality race event – before Friday midnight, then your points will count towards that week’s goal.
  • We allow until Tuesday midnight for the points you’ve earned by Friday midnight the previous week to reflect.
  • Rewards are only awarded on Wednesday so that there is enough time for the points you earned to pull through.

If I work out on a Friday, will my points reflect before the goal cycle closes that night?
Your Vitality points may not reflect right away, but as long as you have captured your points – synced your device or captured your Vitality Race Events results – before Friday midnight then your points will count towards that week’s goal.

If I achieve more Vitality fitness points than required to reach my goal will those points count as credit towards next week’s goal?
No, you need to earn the required amount of Vitality points each week in order to achieve your goal for that week. Extra points will not be carried over from a previous week’s goal.

Why did my new weekly goal increase when I didn’t achieve my last goal?
Vitality Active Rewards sets each weekly goal that takes your entire Vitality Active Rewards history into account. This means that it’s possible for your goal to increase even if you didn’t reach your goal in the last cycle, depending on all your previous goal cycles. It is also possible for your goal to remain the same even if you achieved it the previous week.

How do I view which activities or events Vitality has received data for?
You can view your activities in the ‘Activity History’ section on your Vitality Active Rewards home screen in the Discovery app.

Can I use Vitality Active Rewards without an iPhone or Android device?
No. Vitality Active Rewards is only available on Apple iOS devices and Android smartphones. However we will continue to monitor which devices and operating systems our members are using and update future versions if necessary.

My reward QR/wiCode code isn’t working
Let the cashier at the reward partner scan your smartphone with the QR code of your selected reward on your app. You can also manually enter the wiCode underneath the QR code at the till point. If that doesn’t work, please ask them to call their head office for help.

I reversed my QR code and now it doesn’t work. Can I get a new one?
Yes. If you redeemed your Vitality Active Reward, then cancelled it and the cashier reversed the transaction, your QR code will no longer work. You can then call the Vitality call centre on 0860 99 88 77 and inform them that your reward was reversed. The agent will verify this and issue you with another reward for the same Vitality Active Rewards partner. The new reward will be active for two weeks from date of issue.

Can I redeem my Vitality Active Reward with any other partner discount?
No. You can’t redeem a Vitality Active Reward in conjunction with any other special offers or partner promotion in-store. Please check the back of your Vitality Active Reward to see the redeemable products available.

I achieved 3 goals in a row, but one of my goals had points come through late. Will I get my surprise reward spin?
Make sure that all of your fitness points reflect, and that your goal is achieved by the Tuesday after your goal week to ensure that you will receive your goal streak and your surprise reward spin. Goal streaks cannot be awarded for any late events that reflect after the 3 week goal cycle streak has ended.

What’s the difference between a goal streak and the most consecutive goals performance metrics?
When you achieve a goal streak, you will have achieved 3 consecutive weekly goals and get to spin the wheel for a surprise reward. The most consecutive goals performance metrics calculates your performance since you activated Vitality Active Rewards and functions to challenge you to continue to beat your personal best.

How likely is it that I will get a dream holiday when I get to spin for a surprise reward?
There are a limited number of prizes in each category, and these are randomly allocated when you spin the wheel to select your surprise reward. Whenever you achieve a goal streak of 3 goals achieved consecutively, you will get a chance to spin the wheel and you will get a surprise reward. Surprise rewards range from coffees or smoothies (core rewards), shopping rewards (bonus rewards), gadgets and kitchen accessories (retail rewards), weekends away (grand prizes) and dream holidays.

Why do I need to give consent to share my details with other Vitality Active Rewards members?
In order to compete against your friends and others in the Vitality Active Rewards programme, it is necessary to consent to reveal your name and goal progress so that you can see where you stand relative to others.

Is a goal streak based on a rolling 3 week goal cycle?
No, you can only earn a surprise reward once every 3 weeks. Once 3 goals have contributed towards one goal streak, they cannot be used to contribute towards the next.

What are fitness days?
Fitness days are any day where you have earned at least 100 Vitality fitness points. This could include visiting the gym, tracking 100 or more steps using a Vitality-linked fitness device, or tracking a workout using a Vitality-linked fitness device.

Why does Vitality track performance metrics like fitness days and points?
You can track your own performance and try to improve your stats over time. You can also use these metrics to compare yourself to your friends and other Vitality Active Rewards members.

I’ve won a dream holiday or grand prize, how do I redeem it?
View the dream holidays and grand prizes benefit guides for more information. Please also refer to the reward screen that pops up when you spun the wheel for further instruction.

Can I gift my Apple Watch to someone else?
You can, but remember that if you do so, your personal Vitality Active Rewards goals will still be used for this benefit. Is there a monthly fee that I need to pay for the Apple Watch?
If you meet all your weekly Vitality Active Rewards goals for 24 months, Discovery Vitality will fund your Apple Watch in full. If you don’t meet your goals, your primary Discovery Card will be debited by a monthly amount (penalty) that is calculated as a percentage of the retail price.

For example, the table below is based on a retail price of R7 400. If you didn’t meet all your goals in a month, your Discovery Card would be debited by up to R308.33 a month for 24 months (pricing subject to change). If you achieved three of your four Vitality Active Rewards goals that month, just R154.16 would be debited due to your engagement in Vitality Active Rewards.

Weekly Vitality Active Rewards goals met in a month 0-1 2 3 4
The monthly amount (penalty) that will be debited from your primary Discovery Card (for 24 months) 100% 75% 50% 0% (Discovery Vitality will fund the monthly amount for your Watch in full)

My Apple Watch penalty amount is incorrect.
Your Apple Watch penalty amount is calculated based on the number of weekly Vitality Active Rewards goals you achieved in a month. This amount is calculated as a percentage of the retail price of Apple Watch Series 3 or Apple Watch Series 4 at time of collection from iStore.

For an example on how to calculate the Apple Watch monthly amount, please look at the benefit guide.

Who qualifies for the Vitality Active Rewards with Apple Watch benefit?
To qualify for this benefit:

  • An iPhone 5S or later is required to use Apple Watch.
  • You must activate Vitality Active Rewards. If you haven’t yet activated it, do so today by downloading the latest version of the Discovery app and clicking on Vitality Active Rewards under ‘Vitality’.
  • You must have a Discovery Gold Card or higher. If you don’t have a qualifying Discovery Card, you can apply for one or request an upgrade on www.discovery.co.za. You can also call us on 0860 99 88 77. If you do have a qualifying Discovery Card, it must be in good standing. Your Discovery Card account is in good standing if it is open, active and not in arrears for more than three months. Your account is not in good standing if you need to undergo debt counselling.
  • You require a Discovery Gold Card or higher with a straight limit of at least R15 000 and an available balance of a least R5 000. You can request a limit increase online or on 0860 99 88 77.

Why can’t Discovery Blue Card holders get Apple Watch if they have a qualifying limit?
Vitality Active Rewards with Apple Watch is a unique benefit that caters only to Vitality members who have a Discovery Gold Card or higher. It is an additional benefit to all the other features that Discovery Card holders benefit from. This eligibility requirement considers the value of the benefit and features of the Discovery Blue Card versus the Discovery Gold Card. Please feel welcome to call 0860 99 88 77 if you’d like to discuss a Discovery Card upgrade with one of our service executives.

Why is my Apple Watch penalty amount so high?
The reason for a higher penalty amount is that Vitality could not debit your Discovery Card with the Apple Watch penalty amount for the previous Apple Watch goal cycle to various reasons such as: insufficient funds, frozen accounts etc. In instances where Vitality cannot debit your Discovery Card for the above mentioned reason, Vitality will debit your Discovery Card account with the outstanding Apple Watch penalty amount and the FULL monthly penalty fee for the current Apple Watch goal cycle, even though you may have reached all your goals in the current Apple Watch goal cycle.

Illustrative example: Apple Watch goal cycle for January 2018 – you achieved 2 goals and therefore your Apple Watch penalty for this cycle is 75%. Vitality was unable to debit your Discovery Card due to insufficient funds on the 10th February 2018. You have an outstanding Apple Watch penalty of 75%. In the February Apple Watch goal cycle you achieved all 4 goals and you would not have had any penalty amount debited to your Discovery Card on 10th March. However, because you have an outstanding penalty amount from your January Apple Watch goal cycle of 75%, the goals you achieved in February will not be taken into account and you will be debited the outstanding Apple Watch penalty for January (75%) + the full monthly penalty for February (100%) on the 10th March 2018.

Why is the benefit only applicable to Apple Watch and not Android devices?
The Vitality Active Rewards with Apple Watch benefit is part of a global collaboration with Apple, and so is currently only available with Apple Watch Series 3.

Vitality does cater for various device preferences – members can use their preferred fitness device or app to track their activity and earn Vitality Active Rewards by linking their device or app to Vitality.

Members can download the latest version of the Discovery app onto their iOS or Android smartphone to activate Vitality Active Rewards.

Also, with Vitality HealthyCare and HealthyGear, Vitality members can get up to 25% cash back on various fitness devices through our partner stores.

Why was my Apple Watch penalty amount not debited to my Discovery Card this month?
There are various reasons as to why your Discovery Card was not debited with an Apple Watch penalty amount, these are:

  • You achieved all your weekly Active Rewards goals in the previous month.
  • Your Apple Watch billing cycle has not started.
  • You received an Apple Watch Welcome notification that incorrectly indicated the Apple Watch goal period that would be used to calculate your Apple Watch penalty. To ensure that you were not prejudiced we moved your Apple Watch Billing cycle to match what was communicated to you in your Welcome notification.
  • You haven’t collected your Apple Watch. The Apple Watch billing cycle only starts the next full month after collecting your Apple Watch.

Will I be able to return my Apple Watch?
Returns on Apple Watch will be governed by the distributor’s policies. To view these, visit www.istoreonline.co.za. If you return your Apple Watch, your R799 activation fee will not be refunded.

What does this benefit offer Vitality members?
